Welcome to The Duality of Man, an original animanga role-play that features numerous supernatural creatures. Unfortunately, these various species have distanced themselves because of the war that occurred thousands of years ago, plaguing some with eyes that only see their dualism. While others meddle themself with their differences, two groups fight, each attempting to eliminate the other in for their definition of worldly peace. These two groups of the Terror Response Syndicate (TRS) and the Assembly of Phantoms (AP). With individuals fighting merely over their differences, it brings uncertainty to the outcome of this war.
We happily accept all role-players as long as they obey the rules and are capable of meeting our word count of 50. This does include those who are unfamiliar with this style of role-playing. The staff of The Duality of Man are willing to happily help those who are new to the role-playing world so they feel comfortable on site. Feel free to message the staff if you need help, they can be found here or in the site Discord and will gladly answer questions alongside calm concerns. If you have any suggestions we would love to hear them; guests may use the support board as a suggestion area as well. Should you decide to join, may I say welcome to the site and we all hope you enjoy your time here.
Yours Truely,
The Staff

Yep, just like Nolan was worried about, it seemed like everyone in the store heard the way-too-big-Dragon come crashing to the ground as though knocked over by a bolt of lightning sent by Zeus himself from the heavens. Nolan cringed when looking away from the statue and seeing a couple customers staring over at them, looking as though they were both startled... and judging them. The man's comment about it being possibly caused by wind would have been met with a nervous, but honest laugh at such an idea since... as if.... wind would be able to do that, inside a building. It was funny though and did lighten the situation to hear.[break][break]
However, the growing look of mild scrutiny from one of the bystanders distracted Nolan from being able to comment in cheering just and the boy instead scoffed a little as he defended, "Hey, come on, don't look at us like that. It's not like we broke it," It could have happened to anyone...! Unfortunately, just when Nolan had made his defense to the bystanders who seemed to turn around to quickly mind their own business, the staff showed up and heard what Nolan said. Which, inevitably, made it harder to excuse that it just fell on its own. Hearing Gideon speak up towards someone caused his face to brighten in surprise as he turned around and saw the faculty. Ugh, crap.... there was no way he was going to get hired here. [break][break]
"Uh, yeah....! Sorry about that, it just kind of tipped over and fell when we were leaning against it--" Nolan began to explain with a small smile, and tried to demonstrate how they were leaning by raising his arm in a mimicking position, "-- Like this. Y-you know, you should look into putting some kind of barrier or wall around it, so that it doesn't fall on anyone," He just... kept talking.... and talking. And digging a hole, which was the opposite effect of what he was trying to do. A nervous laugh arose from him when one of the staff members rose a brow, and Nolan begun helping the man he was just chatting with pick up books. "We haven't had any issues with it falling over until now," The member specified. "Ohhhh? Haha, oops...! We'll pick everything up, sorry again...!" The young man nervously laughed once more and the staff member sighed. "If you two plan on buying something, don't worry about cleaning up..."

[attr="class","onlytimelyric1"]sure as the sun will cross the sky
The golden tint of the sky befell a dimming hue of red and purple, signifying a sunset that would sun transpire into nightfall. Today, he and his two friends had worked on unboxing more of their items since the move and getting the apartment more decorated. The hours passed with bustle, spontaneous breaks due to getting exhausted from all the heavy lifting and work, and by the time they'd finished a good amount of going through boxes the sun was already beginning to set. [break][break]
With the cool evening air beginning to arise, Nolan could feel it inhaling into his lungs as he ventured out into the public streets of Lorsette, away from the exterior of the apartment complex he recently moved into. His hooded black sweatshirt held within one of its pocket his phone, with ear buds plugged in and playing the soft hum of rock music whilst the young man went for an early evening stroll. He wasn't an early riser and did most of his exercising in the evening or at night, especially lately with trying to get situated in his new home here in the city. If it wasn't chores and work to do back at the complex, it was seeking jobs around the block, and only since a couple days ago did Nolan finally have the opportunity to start actually exploring what Lorsette had to offer.[break][break]
He figured out an easy route from where he lived, down to the park for a good run. Being able to get fresh air, no matter how late it was, was something that Nolan always sought after as he hated being cooped indoors all the time. With the hood pulled over his head, Nolan lightly jogged along the sidewalks with his mind racing with thoughts of all the chaos that'd shrouded his life.... and hastily wanting to have all the mundane activity surrounding moving into a new place pass by, so that he could get into the real business as to why he came here to begin with.[break][break]
After having made his rounds throughout the park, Nolan had completed the bulk of the routine running route he'd started creating for himself and was now walking casually up along a fairly desolate street within the city limits. The playlist on his phone was reaching its final few songs, still humming distantly as he continued walking with the intentions of heading back to the apartment.... but suddenly, just when he'd embarked on a different street, the sound of someone hollering out in distress broke through the music he was listening to. Nolan came to a stop, his face lifting up in momentary confusion from whether if he heard something or if it was just his mind playing tricks on him.... with a yank of the cord, his ear buds came out, and he attentively waited for any other sound. It was then when a panicked "HELP!" evidently sounded from around the corner, when Nolan knew for sure someone was in trouble nearby... in a quiet, if not suspicious side of town.[break][break]
He quickly bolted into the alley where he'd heard the commotion, finding a young man on the ground with a frightful creature towering above him. The sight was shocking, to say the least, and Nolan's eyes grew large when seeing someone was in danger with a rather sinister looking terror. Quickly, Nolan summoned a blare of light between both his hands that rapidly buzzed around in a swirling notion. It took the shape of a transparent, but very bright spear that the boy sent launching right at the terror. "DUCK DOWN!" He shouted in warning to the boy he was attempting to save.

notes: thanks for starting, wolf! looking forward to role playing this
Since moving to Lorsette, Nolan didn't bump into any issues with trying to become acquainted with his new neighbors at the apartment complex. He was naturally a social person who, ultimately, needed human connections in his life in order to keep going throughout his day. Both his friends lightly teased him about it, since one of the neighbors named Hayley had apparently started dropping by more often to say 'hello' after he'd introduced himself to her. He, apparently, gave off an unintentionally "flirty" aura with how open to communicating he was with others.... but Nolan brushed aside their playful jabs, just as always, and didn't put much thought into it. What was wrong with being friendly with people? He didn't want to become a hermit.[break][break]
Through his extroverted temperament, he was even able to get another helpful opinion about buying a book, so it worked pretty darn well for him. Nolan nodded as the man shared how he'd been here for a few months, being fairly new to the area himself and still having plenty of areas around Lorsette he had to explore. "Yeah, this place is pretty cool! And this is coming from someone whom usually doesn't visit book stores," He agreed, offering a small laugh, leaning casually and absent-mindedly against the statue as he simply just conversed, "What's been like living here? Have you seen any--"[break][break]
While Nolan was asking the man out of genuine interest of his experiences since moving here, the statue had begun to slowly tilt.... before, mid-way through talking, the giant dragon went tilting all the way off towards the side from the pressure placed against it. With a loud thud, the ginormous decorative display came hurling into the ground, loudly vibrating and sending a flurry of books scattering all over the place. Nolan's eyes grew large in shock, his mouth dropping open as he turned around to look at the mess. "Woah....! Wh-what the-- how did that thing fall down so easily?!" He blurted out, before cringing as it all came sinking that the mess he'd been part of at a place he'd been intending to apply at for a job, "Ahhhh, crap..."

The other guy picked up one of the glamorously advertised comics, having a look for himself at the artwork and contents within the pages. Personally, for Nolan, he would have probably chosen this as something to read if he were shopping for himself. It looked cool, had some action and intense scenes, and looked worth the price without being an over-load of information to process as someone who wasn't an adamant reader. [break][break]
Now on the other hand for his friend, he would have maybe liked something like this but also was the type of person who could read an actual novel for hours without putting it down once. The guy wasn't on a 4.0 GPA scholarship for summer camp while they were in high school for nothing.[break][break]
Nolan gave an agreeing nod at the guy's suggestion. "Good thinking. You know, I think I'll do just that," He answered and closed the comic with a confident smile, "If he doesn't like it I'm sure he'll have a good time checking out the big selection here anyway. Gives him an excuse to wander around for awhile," Turning, the boy faced the man in a friendly and chatty manner, his back brushing against one of the Dragon Statue's arms as he proceeded to share, "We just moved here a few days ago. Are you a local?" [break][break]

Nolan momentarily looked in the man's direction as to signify his question being directed towards him but his gaze was quick to return to the Dragon Statue Display. He wondered if it was hallow, or heavy... and how easily the thing could tip over if someone accidentally bumped into it. He'd hate to be the one to find that one out! That wouldn't help his chances of getting a job here in the least if he were to cause this Dragon to take flight into the ground.[break][break]
He took another sip of his slushy as the guy spoke, chuckling about how he may have been the wrong person for that question since he didn't read comics. His light brown eyes maneuvered across the Dragon's spread wings, detailed talons holding the shelving centered at the center of its display with rows of books waiting for the curious hands of customers to choose them. On appearances alone, it was impressive, and the man had commented the same exact thing Nolan was thinking.[break][break]
"You read my mind. I was thinking the same exact thing about how cool it is to have a Dragon like this in here," Nolan admitted with a slight laugh, grinning as he once more looked at the fellow customer. This time, his gaze didn't leave him as he went on to comment, "I mean, how you can miss this brute? It's huge!" Nolan reached to retrieve one of the comics from the shelf, opening it and swiftly flipping through the pages, "Pictures look pretty neat inside too-- ah, but anyway, it's not for me but for a friend," Comic still in hand and opened, Nolan smiled at the guy, "I'm looking to surprise him with something. He loves reading just about anything,"

Having just recently moved to Lorsette, the city was still a pretty new territory for Nolan. Traveling across the country to end up here, and the bustle that involved the whole process of not only moving into a new apartment but also trying to tag one down, had rendered him exhausted. There was still a lot to do. He and his friends were far from done with trying to set up their new place, and had yet to even start actually sight-seeing and getting comfortable. It was long, and stressful, relocating from the States to Canada but visualizing the face of his brother was more than enough to keep Nolan's spirits positive and hopeful. [break][break]
This was a new beginning for him and in a way, for his two friends as well. They stayed by his side through everything, being the only two people who didn't turn their backs on him when he'd Fallen. He owed everything to them. Besides his brother and deceased father, they were the only family he had. He had no idea... what would have happened to him or where he'd be had they not been in his life.[break][break]
For their loyalty and sacrifices, he wanted to surprise them both with something. Nolan had went out to gather job applications in the downtown area and intended on bringing bath a present for them and ideally some food. The Halo Crown Mall was one of his stops and Nolan hit up quite a few retailers to apply for whatever jobs they had available, and even submitted applications at the food court. He wasn't in a position to be picky for jobs and just needed something to pay the bills and get by before figuring things out more.... and before he was able to find his brother, wherever he may be in Lorsette.[break][break]
While touring through and trying to get his name out as much as possible for hiring, Nolan managed to obtain an Electric Blueberry Slushy and a special edition video game that one of his friends had set their eyes on. One gift down, one more to go for his other buddy. He had one of his black beanies on and casual street attire consisting of a baggy black hoodead sweatshirt and somewhat torn-up jeans, slurping away from his straw as he stood on the moving escalator that headed up to the second floor. The first retailer that came into view at the end of the escalator was a book store. Bingo. His other friend was quite the book worm, so he was sure he could get him something there while submitting yet another application.[break][break]
Upon stepping in, Nolan was greeted with a quick hello. His head turned in the direction of the employee, removing his mouth from his slushy and offering a friendly smile. "Hey! I'm actually looking for some work. Are you guys hiring?" He asked as he stepped up to the counter, stalling no time in getting right to the chase. "Uhhhhh, I.... I think we might be, let me go ask," The cashier answered and Nolan nodded with a bright smile. "Thanks man," He casually replied as they turned went off into the back, presumably finding a manager or some other higher-up employee. Nolan stood waiting for a few moments before his hands lightly drummed the counter as the wait continued. He waited... and waited. Before his attention span mildly waned and allowed his mind to wander, turning to look at what the shop looked like. He stepped away from the counter towards the nearby display of, starting to sip on his slushy while gazing at a large, detailed Dragon Statue Display of some recent best seller comic series of some sort. "Nice," He murmured with amused awe, lifting his head at the magnificent height of the thing, before sipping on his slushy once more. [break][break]
From the corner of his eye he could see that there was another guy looking around for a book. "Do you think this series is any good?" He asked aloud, boredom in waiting and a natural extroverted personality making it pretty easy for him to simply attempt chatting it up with a stranger. The display was impressive enough to catch his eye, and he was wondering if it might be something his friend would like. Maybe this guy could tell him about it. Nolan wasn't really much of a reader, and he'd rather hear about it from someone else.

notes: Hi Ames, Excited to role play with you! ^-^ Nolan who is not a book-ish person and is, of course, attracted to the cool life-like Dragon advertising a series xD
Nolan is a tall young man with a slender physique. He's not abundantly equipped in terms of muscle mass. Instead, his stature towers at a height of 5"11 with long lanky legs that he has yet to fully grow into. From a first impression he looks no older than an upper-aged teen, his casual street-wear preference of attire additionally eluding this perception. Naturally being an actively moving person, however, his body is toned with hinted muscle that is mostly defined in his arms and chest. A few faded scars hint his frame with the more prominent ones crossing along the sculpture of his left shoulder and near the region of his heart.
His Caramel brown hair is of medium-length and styled casually, falling into natural layers that cup the sides of his cheeks and nape of his neck. Light brown eyes sit upon the peach complexion of his face. He keeps his appearance clean and maintained, albeit with some nonchalance in how he styles his hair and throws on his clothing. A welcoming expression often exudes from him, with an attractive charming smile and easygoing aura surfacing around him.
His once white wings have lost their purity, with few surviving speckles of white hidden within their layers. His wings are now over-taken by hues of Obsidian and highlighted by a very dark navy blue.
Having turned Fallen and not born as one, Darkness Manipulation is of newer territory to him and not something he's accepted as part of himself until recent times. Currently, he can both intentionally and unintentionally summon it, albeit times of which it occurs without intentions are stronger due to the natural source of Darkness have fuller reign than himself. Small or large shadows, dark mists, and searing spirals are what often take form. They're capable of holding, strangling, and lashing attacks.
Minor Light Manipulation: (Advanced)
Growing up an Angel gave him an upper-edge in being better skilled in Light Manipulation as to Darkness. Light is still his preferred choice of offense for this very reason. He's lost the full source of Light magic he was once able to harness but he's nonetheless worked with what he's had left, and hard, rendering him very capable of making powerful use of what he's got. Having previously mostly used Light manipulation for offense anyway has further enabled him to successfully continue part of his once-inherited craft. Nolan is able to summon small shields and spear-like light rays. He's prone to overexertion when forgetting his limitations but is a stubborn fighter who will continue to fight even when he's reached his breaking point.
Hexes: (Beginner, Almost Intermediate)
Nolan has paid little attention to Hexing and its only as of a recent when he's decided to finally embrace the darker side that will forever be part of his existence. He still has reservations on the actual processes behind hexes and has only used chalk, to attempt gaining Sight to see where his brother is. This is his one true motivation for picking up this practice and why he is adamantly practicing.
Blessings: (Intermediate)
Unfortunately having once been advanced in his Blessings, Nolan has downgraded after being out of practice for awhile and no longer having the same amount of Light within him. When not stuck in his own head, can cast a durable Blessing on an individual. The more trusting and genuinely fond he is of the person, the better effects a Blessing will have on them.
Wing Manifestation: (Advanced)
Flying is a desire that's always filled his chest and from the moment he's been able to, Nolan has striven to master flight. He's done a lot of it ever since he can remember and has a fluent ability to float, glide, and soar once Manifesting his wings. He enjoys flying fast and challenging against high winds. Because of how hasty and prone to energy-wasting recklessness he is, Nolan is limited to how quickly he can manifest them and is unable to do so whenever not setting aside enough mindful focus.
Immunities: (Natural)
Electricity Immunity is a natural ability trait of his that derives from his once Heavenly blood. It's impossible for him too be shocked or injured, through natural causes or through attacks from other species. He also is immune to the effects of Holy Water for this same reasoning and is able to bypass Wards and Totems. Fire Immunity is a trait he's been bestowed with after becoming Fallen, rendering him unable to be born and also able to withstand extreme hot temperatures. Lastly, Nolan is immune to aging and has Ceased the Aging Process shortly after turning 19 years of age. He still looks very much like a teenager with a reckless, energetic temperament to boot.
backstory
Nolan was born to a married, middle class couple whom lived in a small seaside town bordering the American west coast. An Apprentice jeweler mother and Fisherman father raised him in a simple and modest upbringing. The only extraordinary thing about his life being what he was born as, the first Angel known to their family tree. His human father and gifted mother were proud of their son, and for his species alone, the town was extremely welcoming towards the family.
He grew up with a happy childhood, having many friends in school, plenty of children to play with, and parents whom were caring and present. Nolan was never alone nor was he ever given a reason to doubt himself. As he neared ten years of age, became much more of a handful with plenty of wild energy packed into his small body. He developed boyish, mischief ways that resulted in him frequently being scolded by his mother whom was at times temperamental towards him while his father attempted to teach him peaceful and wise lessons in life. For that reason he was closer with his father. Happily, the man taught his son all that he knew of fishing, sailing, and the creatures that dwelt within the open waters.
His adventurous curiosity lead him to attempt flying at a very young age, inspired by the stories of winged heroes whom flew so high they could swim among the clouds. Every bruise and scratch he received from his attempts of taking off into a flight, Nolan persistently picked himself right back up. A few boys he became closer friends with served as the perfect rivals for practicing magical abilities through games, dares, challenges, and pranks that got them into trouble.
By the time he was twelve, another member was introduced to the family, a younger human brother named Basil. Much like how Nolan looked up to his father, Basil looked up to him as an older brother... and the feeling was one that gave Nolan a new-found happiness and purpose. He loved his brother and enjoyed spending time with him, protecting him, and brightening Basil's mood with a smile whenever the boy was upset. Basil was calm, peaceful, and gentle and as the youngest son grew, their mother worried about what influence Nolan's rowdiness would have on him.
When the summer came along, she convinced her husband that it would be best for Nolan to send him off on retreats geared towards training the abilities of magically inclined youth. She hoped that kind of environment would help him mature... but the experience and praise Nolan received as an Angel, and as a handsome young man, went to his head. Returning home, the boy was met with even more more praise and admiration from peers whom expressed fantastical interest in his summer adventures. This would continue for three years into high school, enjoying the companionship of his friends, family, and popularity among his peers.
While on a family camping trip before senior year began, an unexpected terrible thunder storm blew in. His mother left to find safety with Basil while Nolan agreed to stay with his father, gathering what little of their items they could before leaving to catch up with them. His father placed blind faith in his eldest son, insisting that it would be faster if he were to fly while carrying him. His father served as his GPS, telling him where to fly.... and once traveling down the mountainous slope of trees, a horrible creature laid eyes upon them. Black, winged like a bat, and viciously taloned, the monster emerged from the trees and zip-lined towards them. Desperately Nolan flew to escape but he wasn't strong enough to carry his father in their race for survival. One hit taken from the creature, and his hold was broken, sending the man tumbling.
The creature didn't stop in its chase, forcing Nolan to fly into a narrow cave of the mountainside, claws violently tearing at the rocks to reach him. Its interest waned but not without a distant, morbid squealing of its kind calling forth from a distance. He searched to find where his father had fallen, clinging to the slim hope that something had broken the impact of his fall. What he found permanently engraved a traumatic image in his head.... of his own father's remains.
A TRS rescue squad found him and took him back to the town for shelter, where he was rejoined by his mother and brother. A high-ranking terror onslaught massacred two of the nearby towns and surrounding outskirts. Emergency centers opened in their small seaside town for survivors of the attack, which would remain open for the remainder of his school days. His mother fell into a depression over the death of her husband, unable to hold her job and unable to properly take care of her sons. Nolan stepped into the role of caring for his family, and doing what he could to keep their homelife sustainable. Through his smiles for his brother's well-being, misery and guilt for his father's death plagued him.
For weeks Nolan was unable to summon his wings, until suffering an excruciating pain. In place of his once white wings, Obsidian feathers slowly appeared, mangled as though belonging to that of a newborn Fallen. Secrets shrouded his entire existence, never letting anyone know of his Fallen status and attempting to keep what was left of his family pieced together. The laughing faces of his friends, the sympathy of their townsfolk and peers, Basil's admiration and trust towards him.... all of it made him feel like a fraud and monster among them. Many of his friends pitched in to help with his brother, and his mother, tempting Nolan to wonder if he should trust in them and tell the truth. Uncertainty surrounded him until graduation. He postponed plans for University to stay and help his family, and while some of his friends departed on their own paths into adulthood, many stayed.
One boy in particular whom he had grown very close to, he confided in with his darkest secret. Within days rumors spread like wildfire about him and what happened with his father, some rumors tripling into worse tales. When his mother confronted him, the truth was revealed. The damage caused by such rumors was not reversed. Formerly kind faces turned into disgust. The friends and friendly acquaintances he once had no longer treated him well, nor did they want anything to do with him. In his mother's declining mental health, the fate of her youngest son being cared for by a foster family while she worked on getting her life back together was one she could swallow much better than having her youngest be watched over her reckless, failure son.... who was responsible for her husband's death.
Nolan arrived home to find his brother gone and his mother disowning him. Her rejection and refusal of telling him where Basil had been sent ignited an angered determination to find him... and so, he searched. The young boy was nowhere near their town. He searched with no luck and found himself completely alone. Only two friends survived from his Fallen transformation, both being from his summer retreats, and they offered him a place to temporarily stay. He never fully gave up on finding his brother but he was always met with the same absence. The following years were dark with no meaning left in his life. Nolan fell completely off track, having nothing else to loose. His coping mechanism for all that was permanently lost was through taking it out on the world, through delinquency and aggression.
In time, he was taught by the patient presence of his friends that he inevitably needed to accept the Hell given Darkness that was now part of him and to stop tormenting himself. His two friends stayed by his side through the worst phase of his life and it was because of them that he came to his senses. He ceased his aging process to ensure that his brother would recognize him when they met again and set upon learning how to use Darkness and Hexes to obtain Sight in where his brother was located, discovering that Hexes offered advantages that Blessings lacked. He set his focus on Hexing until eventually, a foggy vision of his brother appeared with the help of another. They were able to decipher the location as one within the territories between the Canadian cities Lorsette and Aria.
He decided to travel to Canada and reconnect with Basil despite all odds set against him. Both of his friends joined him in his pursuit, leaving America for a new journey. The group of three made ends meet and for the time being, have joined together to pay for rent on a cheap apartment in Lorsette while seeking work to keep them afloat for however it takes to meet paths again with Nolan's younger brother.
misc
Nolan was Captain of his summer camp's Sky Rugby Team. He enjoys fast food and snacks. Given that he stopped aging while still in a teenage body, his metabolism is impeccable. He really likes wearing hooded sweatshirts and beanies. He is a Leo.
