Welcome to The Duality of Man, an original animanga role-play that features numerous supernatural creatures. Unfortunately, these various species have distanced themselves because of the war that occurred thousands of years ago, plaguing some with eyes that only see their dualism. While others meddle themself with their differences, two groups fight, each attempting to eliminate the other in for their definition of worldly peace. These two groups of the Terror Response Syndicate (TRS) and the Assembly of Phantoms (AP). With individuals fighting merely over their differences, it brings uncertainty to the outcome of this war.
We happily accept all role-players as long as they obey the rules and are capable of meeting our word count of 50. This does include those who are unfamiliar with this style of role-playing. The staff of The Duality of Man are willing to happily help those who are new to the role-playing world so they feel comfortable on site. Feel free to message the staff if you need help, they can be found here or in the site Discord and will gladly answer questions alongside calm concerns. Summer 2024
Heat has broken through into a glorious summer. The snow has entirely dried through the spring, leaving to the brilliance of the warmer months. Terror activity has risen as people are brought out of their homes, leaving the TRS in a position of consistent work. Each are attempting to maintain victory in the endless struggle for power.
Since the wonderful members of TDOM enjoy the site enough to play around on it, this thread is to assist with the site's tidying! Functionality is important and we want to make the site functional even if its activity will be minimal at best!
In a hasty silence, Nyla pushed open the double doors that led into the TRS Headquarters. The comforting warm air embraced the young, female shifter upon entry to her place of work. As usual, her blonde hair framed her face and the corners of her lips remained tugged into a large grin. The TRS uniform hugged her body, establishing her as an employee and the dagger accompanied by the red accenting of her uniform confirmed she belonged to the Hunter Division. Glances around the freshly entered room were taken as the hunter mapped the building in her head and prepared a route in order to arrive at her destination. Once her turquoise noticed the correct hallway, the young woman quickly trotted towards it and began weaving through the maze of hallways. A curious and cheerful gleam had settled in her eyes as she remained excited about the developments in weaponry that her co-workers droned on about.
From various sources she had heard about Zephyr's weapons and insignificant tidbits about the newest breakthroughs; kept short to avoid spoilers. The weapon's smith was renown, although, Nyla had only spoken with him in brief exchanges that rendered little information about the individual. There was an peculiar vibe the man emitted, something supernatural and that the shifter found herself incapable of thoroughly explaining. It was similar to a sense of closeness, an odd familiarity that should be nonexistent towards a pair of strangers and thus caused the blonde's own lack of comprehension over the concept. Despite the thoughts of the oddity, Nyla continued moving with a large grin across her face. The woman's excitement showed in body language as her tail softly drifted from both sides. As she grew closer to her destination, the shifters ears twitched subtly as they searched for noise.
Once station in front of the weapon smith's workshop door, Nyla merely stared for a few moments. Interest remained shown in her eyes as she quietly gazed upon the door. Shortly, her hands balled into fists and in a naturally motion the shifter knocked several times, making a playful beat that echoed through the hallways. Once satisfied with her knocking rhythm, Nyla took a step back from the door and awaited for the answer. A large, toothy smile remained on her face as she waited with anticipation for what she would witness beyond the threshold. The shifter rocked back and forth on her feet as she swiftly grew anxious for the weapon displaying action; she needed to feast her curiosity. Patiently, the young woman pondered while awaiting the answer in wonder of what could possibly occur inside of the workshop walls.
Zephyr was elbows deep in a new set of mechanized aror, strictly experimental, and he was under threat of house arrest if he tested it without notifying and getting permission from, the upper levels.
He was also knee deep in energy drink cans and fast food wrappers. all of them licked clean, out of a lack of interest in leaving the workshop. However a knock at the door turned his attention away, his ears perked, having them out so he could listen for the soft tinking of tiny screws falling out of place.
He made his way to the door, his heart thrumming annoyingly for no reason. When he opened the door, three things happened. The first was that he realized there was a very attractive hunter standing there. The second was that his nose picked up on the definite scent of a Fox Shifter.
The third, was his chest felt like it was about to rupture with joy, a joy that had no place, between strangers.
"I, ah, Can i help you?"
His oh so smooth words were followed the sound of a small mountain of tin cans cascading out around his legs.
There was a peculiar amount of anxiousness transcending over Nyla as she found herself being finicky. Her hands gently toyed with her hair, fidgeting to make certain the bun was secure and a definition of perfectly accomplished. The wrinkles in her uniform were quickly flattened out to give the impression of formality and beauty. A surprised expression graced the fox shifter's face due to her usual lack of care towards a strangers; thus why did this man's opinion mattered? The revelation caused the blonde to forcefully cease her fidgeting in order to stand still, attention towards the door. That was when she heard the strange clashing sounds of aluminum and cocked her head in confusion. The fox shifter could not help, but wonder what exactly was occurring beyond the threshold due to the odd noises.
When the door opened was when it began, the sudden, intense and rapid beating of her heart as her turquoise saw the mysterious weapon smith. The nervousness pounced on her suddenly as her senses seemed to take in anything about the man they could manage to notice; almost as though her mind felt it a necessity to catalog it for future daydreaming. The corners of her lips tugged into a sheepish smile, which seemed to be all the woman could manage in the current situation. When he spoke and the cans tumbled out of the room, a gentle giggle escaped Nyla's lips. For a few moments she remained silent, staring by accident at the man's face which she found attractive. Upon realizing, her gaze flitted away and her cheeks had a red tint to them.
"I... um... Heh, sorry to bug you. I just heard from some of my fellow hunters you were working on some new advancements and well, I was wondering if maybe you could look at my daggers, knives, stuff like that. Cause people said you're super good at with weapons," Nyla bashfully answered. Shortly, a hasty comment was added, "That's if you don't mind of course! I mean, you probably get really busy. I mean, if your weapons are as amazing as they say, then I could only imagine you get stacks of requests... But... it would be pretty rad if you could look at mine."
The awkward and shy smile remained on Nyla's face as she rambled through her words. Usually, the fox shifter never felt this bashful in somebody's presence, but it was almost as though Zephyr was radiating something. It was not a concept the blonde could explain considering how suddenly these vibes seemed to overtake her. This mysterious man was definitely somebody Nyla desired to be around, but the reasoning remained uncertain to her.
"Weapons? Yeah, its sort of my specialty. Busy? Not really, i almost never get backlogged."
Probably because he almost never slept, and thus spent almost all of his time working on the weapons.
"Is there anything in particular you would be interested in? I have magnetic knives, daggers charmed to return to your hand after throwing them, throwing knives designed, and charmed, for added effects against creatures made of ice. Exploding Kunai knives. I could make something custom. U'm, i would offer you a seat inside, but i think the chair is buried in...materials."
Materials. More like three weeks worth of energy drink cans. His assistant was going to go nuts when he returned from his trip.
The smile felt permanently etched onto Nyla's face as she looked at the ravenette. Although, those concerns about possibly messing up something in the conversation remained prominent in the shifters mind as she spoke with the other shifter. When he spoke about his specialty, a tiny nod remained as the blonde's response, a glint of surprise flashing in her turquoise eyes. It was difficult to resist being astonished at the concept of a renown weapon smith for the TRS avoiding getting backlogged with weapon requests. Excitement sparked over the idea of Zephyr possessing time to work on her weapons since it meant more time spent with the mysterious man. The thought caused Nyla's heart to flutter a bit which was peculiar. Perhaps she had gotten sick?
"Really? I'm surprised, I expected somebody of your talent to get flooded with requests. I heard some awesome praise among the other hunters so I thought I would be put on a waiting list." Nyla responded. "It's rad that you can help me out though! Thank-you so much!"
The amount of delight was evident on Nyla's face from the broad grin to the glimmer in her eyes. When Zephyr began informing her about the various things he could accomplish with charms, the blonde's ears pricked attentively. Her turquoise eyes widened in amazement at the information provided. It was obvious to the fox shifter why people considered the weapon smith skilled at his craft as he listed off some accomplishments. The final sentence earning a giggle that escaped Nyla's mouth.
"That is awesome! How do you think of this stuff?" Nyla gushed. Shortly, she returned to a serious disposition. "Well, I am prone to shifting while I fight, so something that could stop the enemies should I need the shift would be a nice detail. Unless you have something better in mind. You are the pro after all."
There was a look of amazement in Nyla's eyes as she regarded Zephyr and remained curious about his capabilities. This single person was easily impressing her, although, she had yet to realize what exactly the word "materials" entailed.
He nodded, shifting while fighting was one of his own issues. It had lead to him inventing the 'near infinite space' charm, which stored his items, mostly weapons and armor. But he was a bit faster at shifting than most others. He closed his eyes and then it came to him. An idea he had toyed with, as a way of defending injured hunters who had fallen.
"Area of Effect. I actually know something along that line that would help. Ah, come on in, just dont mind the mess, i sacrifice cleaning for getting work done."
He stepped back, suddenly ashamed of the cluttered and messy condition of his workshop, which had never bothered him before. He hurried over to a charming stand and began scratching notes on a piece of paper for his assistant once the Fallen Angel returned.
"Right so you might not be aware, since very few people are, even among Hunters, but, there are charm spells that cast an area of effect. They dont tend to last long, only a half hour at most, but for a shifter, that wouldn't be an issue, you would use it for a minute at most, then it would be turned off. A shifter with a speedier transformation would get at least 30 uses out of it. We never really explored further, because no one ever thought of using for shifters in that sense. It was first developed for use on battlefield medical hospitals. I dont have any that are small enough for a single person to carry right now, we were experimenting with a larger charm that would have a longer life span. For now though..."
He opened a drawer and pulled out a carefully carved pendant charm. The charm was carved into the shapes wolf's head, something of Zeph's actually, a replacement charm he had been working on for his own current one.
"Right this is a Storage Charm, my own invention, with the help of my assistant. It can hold up to the mass of an adult African elephant. Thats mass, not weight. If you try to put a 5 ton tractor trailer in there, it wont fit. but you could a 40 ton hyper dense sphere in there and no issue. Just put it on, then say 'Register'. That will link the charm to you, so no one else can access the weapons or armor within. When you put an item, give the item a name or a number. Then when you need it, simply say 'Access' then the name of the item. With Armor, it will automatically equip it, if you register it while you are wearing it. Weapons appear in the hand they were last held in."
He was trying very hard to not stare, or stutter, or say something stupid.
There was definitely something particularly special about this stranger considering the unique essence he seemed to radiate, at least to Nyla. Appearance wise he was handsome and furthermore he possessed an incredible intellect in weaponry which even seemed to dabble into various charm-based supports for TRS members. The glimmering interest remained in the female shifter's turquoise eyes as she listened attentively to what the other shifter was planning. At the mentioning of mess, Nyla's ears pricked slightly as she remembered the numerous strange noises that she heard beyond the door; certainly it could not be that bad? Although, once the threshold was crossed, the fox shifter's eyes widened in both surprise and concern. The interior of the workshop was an ocean of energy drink cans and various wrappers that clunked together when the other shifter waded through the metallic sea.
"Man, you weren't kidding about the entire 'I sacrifice cleaning to get work done' thing. Umm, is it not easier to work in cleaner conditions?" Nyla responded as she gazed at the mess.
There was a thankfulness in wearing the TRS issued pants even if they would likely require cleaning after navigating the workshop. With caution, the shifter entered the ridiculous mess in hopes that nothing sharp was hiding beneath trash. A momentary glance was taken towards the door, but ultimately was ignored since shutting it seemed improbable impart to the can flood. Gradually, Nyla managed to follow Zephyr in order to be informed about the various charms he could provide. Her complete attention returned to the weapon smith as he mentioned the capability of area effecting charms.
"That's incredible," Nyla commented with a grin. "I'm about average myself for shifting time."
It was impossible to not be impressed by the numerous implications that this man had discovered for the capability of charms. Her eyes locked onto the pendant when it was pulled out of the drawer. Immediately, she was amazed by the careful carving of the wolf's head and found herself gazing over the work of art. Being an artist herself caused a broad grin to cross her face over the amount of care that had gone into the carving. Once the information was being stated, Nyla's eyes flickered back towards Zephyr with a hint of admiration in them. The explanation caused a slight chuckle to escape her lips, it reminded her of a video game toolbar since some had hot keys for quickly accessing items.
"Kind of sounds like a video game almost," Nyla commented. "Man, if I could wail on terrors using a controller and a video game character I could totally become one rad hunter."
Only a few moments later did the blonde find herself glancing away from her gaming-based comment as she thought about how nerdy she probably sounded. Numerous of her popular friends always berated about the pointlessness of video games, stating that investing time into them was a pointless recreation. Silently, she prayed for similar criticism to not commence from the weapon smith over her favorite activity; other than drawing of course.
"Normally my assistant keeps things clean, but he's off on some grand adventure of some kind. Something about a Dragon Molt."
Zephyr knew full well what his assistant was doing. He had after all sent the Fallen Angel to collect the shed dragon scales.
At the mention of video games however, he forgot his embarrassment over the mess and grinned.
"Actually got the idea from the Infinite Bag from War of Worlds. If it was as easy as using a controller, well, I'd be hunting more often than i do. I might be a weapon smith, but I'm also a highly trained TRS Hunter. I dont like to admit it very often but Roland Blacktower is my cousin, one of the youngest to ever achieve the rank of Elite Hunter. We are both descended from a shifter who supposedly managed to slay a fully shifted Dragon, on her own. I'm actually the first Shifter in our family since her. Roland was ripped up by a Lycan on a mission."
He was actually proud of his cousin, in some ways. Roland was a skilled fighter, and while he acted the fool more often than not, when it came to a fight, it was hard to match his ability. Zephyr had seen Roland get serious in a fight all of one time, and that had been, frankly, terrifying.
"So, um, if you like video games, we could bail on this dump, and head down to my Design Room. Its where i keep my gaming systems, and my drafting tables. We could talk games, and weapons, while we try to figure out something for you."
He felt the need to clean the place, but he kept his Design Room in a state of near constant hospital cleanliness.
Wading through a sea of drink cans was not the image that phased through Nyla's mind when it came to spending time with black-haired male. A mere passing through the numerous cans made her legs feel sticky and uncomfortable. She was capable of ignoring the feeling due to years spent caring for herself and younger sister, although, the female shifter worked tirelessly to maintain a clean household. The mentioning of the assistant caused the blonde's eyes to widened as she glanced around; they were going to have plenty of work upon return. There was a hint of sympathy that flashed into the fox shifter's eyes for the unfortunate assistant of the messy weapons smith. Although, there was always the money that could be received for the recycled goods.
"Man, they will have loads of work. Can nobody else help with the cleaning until their return? Cause if not, I could always find some spare time. No promises though, I have to take care of my little sister," she offered.
Steadily, her gaze returned to Zephyr as a lip tight smile crossed her lips. Assisting with menial cleaning would grant her more time with this alluring man who had managed to capture her interest. A chance was provided to assist her fellow TRS member temporarily until the servant's return. When her unintentional video game comment received a positive response as it was stated the concept's origin, the grin on the full-time hunter's face broadened. A gleam of curiosity entered Nyla's turquoise eyes when Zephyr gave some explanation on his family history. Being a rather social person, it granted the extroverted, young woman a chance at more conversation. There was slight hesitation at the mention of his cousin's name since there was vague familiarity; likely another person she heard the occasion gossip or comments about. Lack of information made it difficult for the fox shifter to completely understand the irritation in admitting the relation, but she decided it was better not to touch on the subject.
"That's awesome! I just come to from your regular old family. Only real neat thing is that I moved here from BC," Nyla responded with a shrug.
The video game offer immediately perked Nyla's interest which was obvious by her expression and body language. After her game playing friends had left during her younger years, the blonde rarely gained the chance to play or merely converse over the subject.
"Yes! That sounds amazing! Video games are a perfect muse for this kind of stuff too! I should have grabbed my drawing book to, look through that stuff always helps as well." There was enthusiasm in Nyla's voice as her excitement increased,
As she stood in the black-haired man's presence, her smile widened. Admittedly, she was beginning to enjoy his company considering he did not possess the similar attitude of the jocks and gossip girls who berated about her video game pass time. Furthermore, there was still the everlasting fluttering of her heart beat and slight nervousness that accompanied her excited emotions, but Nyla peculiarity found herself enjoying the emotions. There was a momentary pause as she quickly remembered the pendant and her curiosity grew.
"Hey, did you carve that pendant you showed me? Cause I just wanted to say, you did a marvelous job and I am genuinely impressed. I'm more a pencil and paper artist myself, mostly just dabbling in paints, pastels and maybe a bit of clay if I feel like it. Although, I've enjoyed pencil drawing more and even find that I can get engrossed in it and can almost imagine the character, should there be one, moving in my mind. Just makes me want to draw more," she rambled slightly.
The slightest hints of pink marked her cheeks as Nyla glanced away, mildly embarrassed from her rambling habit. There was a silence that fell in an attempt to allow her newly obtained company to speak. Her loquacious tendencies could be halted in favor of learning more information about the weapon smith, furthermore, she found herself mildly self-conscious which was an oddity for the usually confident blonde.
Normally, Zephyr found rambling to be annoying. Not in this case however. He found it oddly endearing.
When she offered to clean up for him, he was torn between wanting to accept, because it meant having her around, and wanting to refuse, because the mess was embarrassing. He was no longer torn when he considered her younger sister as part of the equation.
"You could bring your sister along, if you like. I actually kind of like kids."
Children were one of the few things that most people found annoying that he did not. He preferred children, because their minds were more open to the possibilities, not bound by the boxes that society eventually plunked down over everyone's heads.
"And yes, I carved it myself. Everything here was made by me. My assistant supplies the magic that powers the charms, but I work the materials, and I write up the formulas and equations for the spells used. I prefer to shape materials, my drawing skills are limited to straight edged blueprints, and schematics."
An awkward smile was etched onto Nyla's face as she remained in the presence of the weapon smith. Self-conscious thoughts were conquering her usually confident mindset. There was those petty reminders that perhaps her hair was not perfect or that her rambling tendency would cause Zephyr to dislike her. Although, her thoughts eased when her attention was captured at the mentioning of bringing Ines along to help. The concept of another individual who liked kids caused the fox shifter's smile to broaden and turn toothy. An incredible amount of happiness accompanied the concept of the man enjoying the company of children considering her little sister could be clingy. The blonde was never bothered by how attached her sister was, but sometimes others could be. There was a slight flutter of heart as thoughts of bringing Ines to meet this interesting weapons smith occupied her mind.
"I will have to consider that sometime," she replied cheerfully. "Although, I should do some cleaning beforehand. I would prefer not to lose Ines in a sea of energy drinks."
The playful teasing was punctuated by a gentle laugh. She was hoping that her fellow shifter could handle teasing considering Nyla was prone. It was humorous, even when other individuals teased her to enact comedy or revenge for her own tendency. Momentarily, the fox shifter looked at Zephyr, her eyes shortly widening as she realized she had forgotten to mention her name. Instantly, Nyla offered her hand alongside an amiable smile towards the weapons smith; although, the man could have read her name tag, it felt proper to introduce herself.
"I'm Nyla in case you didn't already know," she stated.
As Zephyr explained how his weapon making functioned, the blond nodded attentively to every single word he said. Afterwards, her turquoise eyes gazed around the room, gradually growing impressed with the various items that constituted as possible weaponry or battle support items.
"That's incredible! Sounds like you two make a good team," the fox shifter responded cheerfully.
There was a peculiar sorrow in the concept of the partnership between Zephyr and this mysterious assistant. It caused her self-conscious thoughts to enter overdrive as her mind remained occupied about the notion of a romantic relationship between the weapons smith and his assistant. Each time, the concept was pushed aside with insistence of impossibility, but Nyla failed to comprehend why the idea bothered her. Two people being in a happy relationship was a positive and yet this time she mildly despised the concept which was the definition of strange to the social girl.
Zephyr laughed although there was a bit of embarrassment in the laughter. The workshop was always cluttered. Truthfully he never really bothered with cleaning because it was so...relaxed. He preferred to keep his mind running, because when he wasn't busy, he started to think about things he preferred to leave locked away.
"Well, I might do a bit of cleaning later. Organize things at least. I just tend to...forget about the cleaning while i work."
Her name caused a small spark in his mind, as he thought of Several meanings. His favorite perhaps being the Irish 'Champion'. He immediately thought of a set of armor, as well as several long knives and daggers he could craft that would compliment such a theme.
When she talked about he and his partner being a good team he became slightly uneasy.
"Hmm, well hes a skilled charm maker, and he doesnt talk much. We get along because both prefer to get our work done, quickly, and effectively. He doesnt pressure me to work faster, or slower, and i dont push him to make charms stronger, or more complex. I mean, you could call us friends, but outside of our workshop, we dont spend a lot of time together."
For years, Nyla had been the respectable parental figure in her uncle's home. Neither her aunt nor uncle cared enough to clean, both becoming absurdly lazy caretakers. There was never a moment when the female shifter was bored considering the numerous chores to accomplish in the house and personal time required with Ines. Although, this mess seemed to at least possess reason considering Zephyr's time was occupied with work. The slight embarrassment in the laughter was detected by Nyla's ears which twitches subtly in response. It sparked a soft giggle from the blonde as she found the embarrassment to be somewhat endearing. A gentle smiles traces her lips while she looked at Zephyr, an amused glint in her eyes.
"Man, you must love working if you get so focused on it," she said. "At least you can say it is something you are devoted to."
There was almost always a positive in Nyla's mind and after the slight embarrassment. The blonde was attempting to make a more comfortable atmosphere, partially for Zephyr and partially for herself. She was praying that perhaps creating a more amiable essence to the conversation would sooth her rapid heart beat; at least to points that each flutter did not feel like an escape attempt. Although, relief arrived in the statement of the weapon's smith connection to the mysterious charmer. It was difficult for Nyla to comprehend her relief, but she did not allow it to appear on her happy expression.
"I see," Nyla responded.
There was understanding in the interesting team dynamic, but relief remained in the distance the pair had. There was little thought taken towards the reason as the female shifter decided to think about it later.
"Well, I work to distract myself, and to destroy as many terrors as I can. The fact a lot of the more elite hunters, like Roland, tend to break their weapons, means i have to keep up not only with new requests, but repeated requests. So keep myself plenty distracted."
He blinked a few times, and then not wanting her to leave too quickly, or at least leave his presence, he blurted out an offer.
"While we brainstorm ideas, would you like to go to a small place and get something to eat? Outside the building? Theres a nice place, a few blocks away, they make amazing food, and the owner is a Gifted Human with the ability to create the raw ingredients so no animals are killed for the meat, and no planted need to be harvested."
((Thats an NPC concept i have, maybe a full character))
There were no thoughts taken towards possibly leaving Zephyr's presence since Nyla found herself enjoying it. A foreign vibe transcended over the fox shifter with the weapon smith around, making her feet feel lighter and butterflies in her stomach. Despite these peculiar emotions, there was something pulling her towards remaining near the man who made her heart flutter joyfully. This was definitely different, making the blonde easily believe that there was something significant about this weapons smith; something that managed to obtain her attention on several levels. Attentively, Nyla listened while Zephyr explained that work easily kept him busy, nodding occasionally to display acknowledgement. A mild disappointment was discovered in the revelation of Zephyr's work distraction considering it suggested the possibility of leisure time alongside him being difficult to gain. The notion sounded frustrating and Nyla prayed that she could discover a method to thoroughly earn his attention.
"That makes sense. Somebody needs to do repairs and if you made the weapons, you would be the expert," Nyla responded. "Probably makes getting distracted a whole lot easier."
For an instance, the blonde was wondering if the time arrived for her to leave. There was an extreme likelihood that Zephyr had numerous tasks to accomplish and she was being a distraction from them. Before she could piece together a sorrowful farewell, the weapon smith blurted out an offer. Instantly, her turquoise eyes flitted towards him. A smile stretched across her lips, the offering to get some food before continuing idea discussion seemed pleasant; even the locations concept was wonderful.
"That would be wonderful," she agreed hastily; perhaps a bit too fast. "I have never heard of the place myself, but it sounds awesome! Probably helps a lot of people considering nobody needs to provide ingredients."
A broad grin remained on the female shifter's face, making it obvious that she was content with being asked to attend a restaurant with the weapons smith. Certainly this meant she was not a major distraction, right? A newfound confidence arrived with being asked since it brought the belief that Zephyr was enjoying her company; at least to a degree.
