sometimes the enemy

Echoing through the shut wooden doors was the cacaphony of cheers, yells and booming music. As the progression of spring overtaking the winter chill entered Lorsette, the famous families gathered and hosted parties related to the shifting seasons. A celebration of the passing cold turmoil giving way to the beauty of blossoming flowers and buzzing bees. Moments ago had the party-goers flocked inside, each carefully documented and granted entrance in accordance to the attendance list provided by the hosts. Though, many knew showing up uninvited meant undoubted scrutiny from the onlookers.
Years serving the Titanium Shield tipped Avery to the regular behaviours of the wealthier individuals. Many desired those considered superior to grace them with admiration while fighting to capitalize the Lorsette social scenes. The concept was beyond the common-wealth bodyguard and high-classed introvert. Rather, he preferred to stow himself away in his house in the wilderness alongside the children he cared for. Life was simplistic but worthwhile. Inside the warded square of his home where a sense of safety and those who lived with him were cherished at every turn.
Despite the coming of spring, the air held a nasty chill. Between his subtly parted drifted the softest clouds of warm breath into the night sky. While his temperature regulation charm accompanied by a thin jacket defended Avery from the cold, the symptoms remained. Clouded breath, coated people and individuals seeking warmth in whatever place granted it. Spring took the edge off the night cold, but until the middle, a frigid front would remain when the sun retreated. Silently, the one-eyed brunette shifted in his spot, stirring his muscles to keep away stiffness.
His single forest-green eye scanned his surroundings, subtly narrow as it played over the bushes. A breath drifted through to rustle their branches, but everything was still and silent otherwise. Beyond the front yard were bright streetlights pouring over sidewalks, leaving patches of light amidst the darkness. Dots of lights available in windows created vague outlines of houses and the layout of rooms. Above the many rooftops was the endless sky dotted with gorgeous stars and a claw-shaped moon shining. The night possessed breath-taking beauty, however, with cold as its companion it was rarely admired.
The delicate ears of the lycanthrope picked up on rustling from his coworker. Instinctually, he glanced in his direction, eye analyzing the young man beside him. For the entire entrance and subsequent watching, the younger guard leaned against the building side with fingers tapping away at his cellphone. It contrasted the stiff-backed and stone-faced Avery standing at the other side of the door, attentive and prepared to take action. The man's attention had been entirely on his phone, however, the lycanthrope finally received his gaze.
"Imma be heading out soon, got a few things to do, but I got someone coming to take over," the man explained with a goofy grin.
The brunette's gaze faltered, exhibiting his unimpressed reaction. There were plenty of opportunities before the young man attended work to arrange somebody else's arrival, alas, he succumbed to foolishly finding someone last second. An irritated sigh naturally escaped the depths of Avery's throat.
"Understood," he mumbled coldly to his temporary partner.
Abrupt changes in partnership were something obnoxious to the older lycanthrope. A different individual entering the scene meant explaining guests of concerns or informing them with vivid descriptions of who attended and who was turned away. There were an endless amount of factors that could inevitably lead to the downfall, or at least, difficulties within an operation. The initial arrivals, in Avery's opinion, were a crucial viewing point for their protection efforts. It allowed them to survey all occupants of the party and gain a vague idea of their intentions, malicious or not.
However, the turned away lingered endlessly inside Avery's mind. There was a chance they would attempt to slip inside with the changing of faces. Additionally, the petty few who held their grudges to their heart would require explaining rather than a simple nod, gesture or single-word response... Thus, Avery maintained his cynical viewpoints while mentally critiquing his temporary assistant.
