Pain. Like lightning to the rod, it was instantaneous and all consuming. The feel of hot metal lancing through flesh seemed to linger in Leo's mind like the bright flash of a camera. They could still feel the dense ball of fury that danced around within their leg, demanding her attention. They could not stop now though. So Leo continued to run, each other step sending pain up their spine like the tides of the ocean, steady and all consuming.
It had all happened too fast, and they had only just managed to escape in the mayhem. In a way Leo had felt something was off, like a tingle in their gut that set them on edge as soon as the door to her Virtual dimension opened. Just as their client was supposed to be entering, they were ambushed by the very gang they had come to learn about. The second the first round was fired, time seemed to slow. At the speed of thought Leo raced through the open door with their mind, following the digital threads to find out just what the threat was. It had only taken a few moments to find the burner phone within her clients group, and only another few to find a call not 15 minutes ago to another cell phone only a couple dozen feet away. At the center of another group of devices.
Her clients had quickly turned and returned fire, but it was too late for many. Leo had moved quickly despite the intensity of the firefight, quickly destroying the door to the dimension and collapsing it. This removed their cover, but also allowed them the ability to move. The position of the door had been strategic enough to allow for two routes of escape, but there was nothing she could do about the pistol round that burst into their leg as soon as the dimension was closed. Leo collapsed immediately under both the force of the round, and their own weight. They couldn't help but scream out in pain as tears clouded their eyes. Yet this cry of anguish was lost within the shouts and shots that rang out within the tri-directional alleyway.
Leo had thought that they were prepared to act in such a crisis, but the pain was unimaginable before now. Instead of enacting their plans, using their abilities to seek aid in the form of local law enforcement, they simply began to flee. It was hard to put any weight on her leg, and they had to continuously lean against the wall to remain vertical. The sound of her heartbeat was almost anything they could hear, with the heavy breathing of their lungs occupying everything else. Pressure could be felt in her neck as adrenaline pumped and kept them moving.
It had only taken a few moments for Leo to quickly hobble down one of the opposite alleyways, away from the firefight, but it felt like eternity. Right as Leo was about to turn the corner into another alley way, a second round from the fight glanced across her shoulder. Fire seemed to brand its way through their nervous system, racing for all it was worth. Their vision wavered for a moment and they stumbled just out of view of the aggressors. Ragged breaths came as Leo tried to fill their lungs, but it never felt like enough. "I can't stay here"
When they thought about where to run, their mind drew a blank. Another round hit the wall near her, spurring their instincts into action. Like the greatest of hackers, they simply bypassed all logical thought, and ran. As quick as they could move with an injured arm and leg, Leo hobbled toward the sound of people. Without meaning to, Leo reached out to nearby technology, but came up mostly empty. The few cameras that were nearby didn't have any cops visible, and even then the connection was dodgy. Controlling technology required a stable mind, as any erraticness could throw the connection off.
"That bitch ran over here!" A voice called from behind her, another round hit the wall near their head. Leo did their best to dodge, but it only increased the pain in their leg from putting weight on it. The new danger forced their hand, and Leo took the first turn in order to get out of view.
As they ran, they began to knock over crates and trash to slow her persuers. It was then that Leo saw someone walking down the sidewalk only two turns away. With an almost feral animosity, Leo began to sprint while hopping on one leg. The pain was fierce, but her body would not let her fail. Each step was almost a leap as Leo tried to reach salvation, the one chance she had at being saved.
Step. Step. Step. Leo turned once, then twice. Only 10 feet away lay the sidewalk of a larger road. Cars moved about at a seemingly slow pace, as if they were unaware of the looming predators that chased her. The bright street lights creating golden halo's in the night sky, were highlighting a bright red haired woman with alabaster skin. It was simply an average height woman, with no outward appearance of strength, but to Leo she might as well have been one of the angels she had seen on the internet.
Leo's lungs felt abused, her throat dryer than the Sahara, but her voice came. "Please! HELP!" Only 5 more feet separated her from the edge of the alleyway, yet a creeping cold was beginning to find its way through her. Step, Step, Step.
*BANG* Leo felt the world spin, only a dull pain registering on their left side before the ground suddenly rushed toward her.
