n and out. Her job was pretty simple and she'd done it too many times to count in the past. Actually handling whatever stunt the AP was trying to pull and taking care of the hostages was the job of the party waiting behind her. They'd been trained well enough that they could probably take this on on their own, but it was safer to know the numbers, especially when innocent hostages were involved. She'd been nearby and she didn't have anything more important to be doing anyway.
She cast a glance back at the people waiting behind her. "Be back in ten," she promised with a confident grin that probably seemed out of place before shifting into her snake form. It was much easier to sneak around that way and she was faster too. She didn't know the inner workings of this bank, which would add another layer of difficulty to her job, but she'd already chosen an easy entrance through a cracked window so it wasn't like she'd have to circle the building to find a way in. Or worse: go in through the sewers. She'd snuck into plenty of places through unordinary entrances and she was never eager to repeat them.
She slithered through without making a noise, but a shutter ran through her as she reached the stone floor. The chilled air may have been pleasant to most, but in her snake form, it was almost unbearable. At this rate, she was going to slip up and cause a commotion which was the opposite of her goal. She was already inside the building and it would be easy enough to sneak around in human form. She was in an empty room in the back. It wouldn't make sense for them to come back here so she should be safe. She still made it a point to hide behind a desk to protect herself as she let her guards down to focus on shifting back.
Peeking out from her cover, Lexie caught sight of a cracked door with light streaming through. That would lead to the public area of the library where she had no doubt the hostages were being held. She silently slid into a position next to the door, listening to any voices that might seep through as she tried to decide whether to start there or look deeper into the vaults to see if she could figure out their game plan. With her back against the wall, she turned her head to get a look at the other room. Of course the part behind the tellers desks would be empty.
She carefully tugged the door back ever so slightly, just enough to let her slender form slip through. It looked like she was clear, so she tucked herself slightly beneath the desk to make sure she couldn't be seen. So far so good. She could hear two sets of footsteps nearby. She had no doubt that if she peeked out she'd match them to two burly men stalking around making sure the hostages stayed in line. She took a deep breath to center herself and was about to slide over to the edge of the desk when a cold object pushed itself into her hand. She jumped and narrowly avoided bumping her head as she whirled around to see a white dog in a service vest.
She sat frozen as he sniffed her arm. She'd never been particularly good with animals. They were unpredictable, and this one was about to ruin her operation. He tossed his head back and her eyes widened. "Please don't bark," she begged, her words coming out as a choked whisper. But it was too late. Hyper yips echoed through the room, giving away her exact location. She glared at the dog but knew that wouldn't get her anywhere. Instead, she repositioned herself into a crouch as she heard a pair of footsteps approach. She needed to be ready to leap out of the way.
"Hey!" the voice was so close that the sharp word sent a chill down her spine. She jumped up just as a man appeared around the corner. Her brain whirred, considering every possibility. Assuming she could dodge his attacks she only had a few minutes before anyone in other rooms came running in. How much information could she get in those minutes? It didn't matter. They knew she was here now and the hostages were at risk.
A fist flew towards her face, forcing her to stop thinking and focus on dodging. Out of the corner of her eye she counted about 8 hostages and spotted the other captor making his way toward them. Outrunning them wouldn't accomplish her goals. She was trained in basic self-defense and she was fast enough to keep dodging, but she wouldn't be able to overcome them. It would still be another 8 minutes before the squad behind her decided something had gone wrong and came to her rescue. If she did what they told her until then she'd be safe enough but they'd have the ability to prepare for an attack, so surrender wasn't an option.
She clenched her teeth as another punch came. This time she wasn't able to fully dodge and it hit her in the shoulder. "Now that's just rude. Didn't your parents ever teach you not to hit a girl?" she smirked, using the words as a distraction to take a few steps back. He'd have to close that distance to get another strike in so she'd be able to react better. The other man wasn't far off and this situation was starting to seem impossible.
