Miriam I really fucking wish reality was just a dream general info
appearance Miriam has no defined appearance. Even so she prefers a more androgynous look. She took on one primary appearance, and will vary her apparent age based on circumstance, though normally staying in a preteen to mid twenties range. She has brown hair, a pale face, and red eyes. The hair hangs to her neck in the back, and ears in the front. Looks somewhat akin to a bowl cut, except that it looks good. personality
abilities Mirror Dweller: Miriam entered the world not by birth (well, kind of by birth, this is explained in history), but by simply existing within a mirror. She does not need to eat, sleep, drink, breathe, etc within this realm. She can do all these things, but they are unneeded. Pleasantries. Things that make those around her more comfortable. The mirror world has odd rules. She can interact with items within the realm as normal, but their real life counterpart is unaffected. For example, a book reflected in a mirror can be picked up, opened, and read. It is notable that the text is reversed, as if seen through a mirror. Miriam grew up like that, though, so is used to it. Manipulated items revert to normal reflections once Miriam leaves the mirror and no one observes it. The mirror world is also not a perfect copy. It has "holes" where reflections do not reveal the real world. Miriam can step over these holes in one or two steps, regardless of how large they are. For example, she can cross from New York City to the coast of Ireland in two steps. The mirror world exists of pockets of reflected space. Gravity is subjective within the realm, and Miriam is able to suspend items in the air simply by not wanting them to fall. Miriam can choose to not step through the darkness at the edge of her zones. Anything physical reflected in the mirror, however, will impede her. Things that would intersect her simply disappear from the reflection. If she focuses, other things in a reflection can be removed. This has no affect on the real world. Should a reflection that Miriam inhabits be disrupted, such as a mirror shattered, Miriam will get shunted to the nearest reflective surface. Miriam can leave the mirror realm for short periods at a time, up to five minutes. She can drag things and people back into the mirror with her. While outside the mirror, she has a traditional body, one that requires eating, breathing, sleeping, etc, though she never has to eat or sleep due to never getting hungry or tired in those five minutes. Living things dragged into the mirror realm share similar properties to Miriam, not needing to eat, sleep, breath, drink, etc. They are not, however, able to freely move between mirror spaces. Miriam must take them between these spaces, though they can refuse to follow. Breaking the mirror that someone forced into the mirror realm is inside of will return them to the real world. Items brought in this way will also be returned to the real world, unless Miriam is in possession of them. All instances of "Miriam" in the above also applies to anyone with sufficient mastery of certain magics, or other inhabitants of this version of the mirror realm. Shapeshifting: Miriam is able to shapeshift between a wide array of humanoidish forms. While she primarily sticks to Human forms, this is not a solid limitation. She is not able to shift while in the real world, but her range of forms within the mirror world is wide. To take a form and bring it to the real world, the form has to be physically stable. While she does not need to know everything involved in it, the form has to be able to support itself, both its weight and its life processes. Most of these restrictions are removed while within the mirror realm, as gravity is what she wants it to be and there are no necessary life functions for the body to fulfill. Her extremes are based entirely on mass, able to go as low as 50 lbs and as high as 220 lbs. While assuming a form for extended periods takes several seconds to transform, she can instantly transform herself for up to one second, before her transformation reverts to the previous state. Immortality: Miriam no longer ages. She stopped at 22. backstory Miriam was born in what would translate to 8 CE by the modern calendar. Though, "Born" may not be the right term. There was a birth, but if that was Miriam is an odd question. The full tale is as such: The daughter of a wealthy banker was whisked away one day. The family claimed her to be ill, and bed bound while they prayed for her health. Certainly, the condition could be called being ill. A growth. Stealing her energy. Causing pains. Nausea. Though most would be woe to call it such. For she was with child, and hidden away for being unwed. The day of birth drew ever closer, and so did the family fret over what to do. A child could not come from nowhere, and the scrutiny the family would receive should one do that would make almost certain that the daughter would forever go unwed. The fears were all for naught, as the child was stillborn. Dead in the eyes and pale in skin, the girl was taken away and buried, only moonlight of a thin crescent guiding the blade of the shovel. Were this to have been a tale of a normal land, without magics or spirits, without gifted, without angels and demons and the plague of the undead, the story may have ended there. But this is not such a world. This is the land where the impossible is common, the improbably is reality. The daughters room had a single mirror, and this single mirror captured the birth. This single mirror had captured the live birth. Yes, within this mirror was a living human baby. Though perhaps "living" is a misnomer. The infant did not move. It did not eat, breathe, or drink. Not for a period, at least. The family thought the mirror possessed by some vengeful spirit. Literally. A few spirits that were in heavy debt had left without notice. Perhaps this was one. An image of the dead child, forever caught within the mirror. The family brought in others, seeking to expel the spirit. No such luck was to be had. No one could remove the thing. So the family broke the mirror, and thought it handled. Until they began to hear a crying. Within a shined brass vase, there was an image of an infant. It moved, thrashing about, as if scared shit-less. The wailing cry roared out from its mouth, endlessly. Never stopping for breath. The family thought this a curse now. But the daughter tried something truly strange. She talked to the child. Spoke to it, using the power of a mother's voice. The baby calmed, slowly, and began to move only rarely. Adjusting now and then, little more than a change of position. Quiet. The family sought other avenues. If not possession, and not a curse, what was it? It was many months later that an older gentleman entered the house. The family watched him expectantly as the child roamed around within its confines. Confines being a loose term. The child seemed to dislike being shunted to another mirror, and avoided it, but often unsuccessfully. Someone hurried to rush their new surface to a safe place, before the child could hurt itself. The gentleman worked his magic. The family got many answers. The child was human, the daughter's daughter. They were granted a small way to interact with the child. Charms that allowed them to reach into the mirror for a few minutes at a time. The child grew older. She began to understand, to think. The family had learned to deal with it. It was hard to keep her in doors, but letting her roam would be more trouble. The threats of punishment only worked for so long. The family could not actually keep her anywhere. She could leave town before they had even made it out the door. She could be in the next town in five minutes. So, she went. She became a learner. She studied magic, though could never practice. Sitting in a mirror, hiding, watching. She traveled the world. Learned languages. Learned tricks. Figured out her own tricks. Escaping her prison. Not for long, but long enough. Gathering trinkets. Stealing a tome, and then escaping the country. Warlocks tend to guard their doors. Very few guard their mirrors. The tome was powerful. Certainly not the strongest in the world, not even the land. But it held power, regardless. The contents within focused largely on summoning, an odd sort of teleportation dependent on a number of other factors. On binding a being, often through mundane means. On rendering it unending, allowing them to be bound indefinitely. On curses and charms that rendered an individual unable to attack the caster. Or mostly unable, as the case may be. On teleportation circles of somewhat unique nature. Designed to not carry the bindings, and to arrive at a smaller circle. One way, almost exclusively. Perhaps the most interesting thing was that the tome had very few spells. It was theory. Thoughts on how things could possibly be done. References to friends of the author who had studied X or studied Y. To other texts with other theories. It took years for Miriam, for she had finally chosen a name, to gather the texts. To add her own notes to the tome. To craft things that she guessed would work, if recited properly, by someone with the proper power, and the proper understanding. But by this point, Latin was dying. And while pursuits of magic kept a breath of life within the language, it was no longer spoken. Study of the language was... more scientific. Less emotional. People did not learn Latin intuitively, like Miriam had. Miriam could form proper sentences without knowing the rules. She knew the rules, but she did not need to reference them. More modern individuals were less like this. It annoyed Miriam. She was stuck within her realm, unable to practice the magics that she had fallen in love with. She drew the short straw. But she was "Gifted", the term they started to use. She was special. Lucky. Nobody cared that she barely felt. That she wondered at night if she was even alive. That she had to TRY to breathe. CONVINCE herself that she was sleeping. Taste was dull. Scent... might not have even existed. Hearing was fine, she could hear from outside the mirror, and speak through the mirror. Or perhaps she heard the reflections talk, and they heard hers. Feeling was dull as well. Everything was less, in here. She had only brief escapes to the real world. Where she truly felt. She truly lived. Humans are not meant to be immortal. Boredom. Her dedication bore no fruits. The witches and warlocks she consulted all either refused to assist her, or died horribly. She could not leave the mirror realm. She could not truly be alive. She fled. Fled humanity. To the far north. To icescapes. Frozen so perfectly, so purely, as to be a mirror. The largest mirror. And so she stayed, on and off, for the better part of a millennium. Staring. Trying to cease. Trying to not think. Trying to not do. Trying to stop whatever it was that kept her alive. Only leaving when she could no longer stand the doing of nothing. They say isolation maddens the mind. Miriam had never been the nicest person. Raised by a family that scared her into never leaving the house? Regarded as a monster for most of her life? But this was not "mean". This was much more than that. This was a horror movie made real. A faerie tale yet to be written. Henry the VIII had just taken the throne. His reign was marked with horror. Attacks, in homes. Through locked doors, without breaking in. Horrible, bloody attacks. Always near mirrors. Panic spread in London, entire communities afraid of the reflected death. Hunters. Dozens of them. Demons and Angels paid enough to work together, alongside vampires and liches and faekin. Miriam got at some of them. Mostly the mortal ones. Though she trapped a few of the immortals in a mirror, until they figured out that breaking the mirror freed the individual. The "heat" grew to too much, to use a phrase, and Miriam left. She had gone by "Mary" at the time, told to some of the victims that yet lived. Even insanity grows boring, when a human has hundreds of years to experience it. Modern times approach, and Miriam has ended up in Lorsette. Why? Because she has not been there recently. misc Have some random facts about your character you want to share?
