Welcome to The Duality of Man, an original animanga role-play that features numerous supernatural creatures. Unfortunately, these various species have distanced themselves because of the war that occurred thousands of years ago, plaguing some with eyes that only see their dualism. While others meddle themself with their differences, two groups fight, each attempting to eliminate the other in for their definition of worldly peace. These two groups of the Terror Response Syndicate (TRS) and the Assembly of Phantoms (AP). With individuals fighting merely over their differences, it brings uncertainty to the outcome of this war.
We happily accept all role-players as long as they obey the rules and are capable of meeting our word count of 50. This does include those who are unfamiliar with this style of role-playing. The staff of The Duality of Man are willing to happily help those who are new to the role-playing world so they feel comfortable on site. Feel free to message the staff if you need help, they can be found here or in the site Discord and will gladly answer questions alongside calm concerns. If you have any suggestions we would love to hear them; guests may use the support board as a suggestion area as well. Should you decide to join, may I say welcome to the site and we all hope you enjoy your time here.
Yours Truely,
The Staff

For someone so apt to wield a knife at a stranger much taller than her, she seemed to fumble a bit with his teasing. It was delicious to watch. He laughed lightly at her prodding his lack of seriousness but said nothing in return as she’d already launched into another topic. Maybe he’d missed it before but there was a strange redness to her cheek. “Hah! As if he has the time to personally watch over you and make your life miserable,” they were turning the corner now, “trust me when I say nobody is watching.”
The words lingered on his tongue, reminding him that he needed more alcohol to numb his racing mind.
Alternatively, more jests at Ruby would achieve the same goal. In an almost cat like gesture Ruby began her tight rope walk on a nearby bench. He was about to comment on her gracefulness when she half-flew into him, saving herself only by applying a tight grip around his arm.
Daichi hissed, a chill crawling up his spine at the unsolicited touch, but he ignored both of these sensations. Instead of doing what he actually wanted to do and fling her the other way it seemed his instincts betrayed him. With one swoop he grabbed underneath her knees with his free hand and steadied her back with the other, holding her like a dainty doll in his arms.
A smirk crossed his face as he stared into those soon-to-be-angry ruby orbs.
“So, you do want a kiss then? You should probably make up your mind about this. I’m pretty old so it’s almost my bedtime,” he chuckled smugly to himself, “you know, I have to get up early for the office work and all. Also, for a cat you have terrible balance.”
It was really stupid having her this close but he wanted the pleasure of having her ask him to put her down. Probably angrily. Maybe even with a slap. Daichi was surprised at how light she was though. A light, angry woman who was close enough to stab him. This was a terrible idea but he was committed now.

Daichi had expected many things from Ruby. A knife so deftly poised across his throat was not one of them. Now then, he really had pushed some buttons possibly a little too far. He spent the next few minutes wondering if she could have actually killed him while she prattled on about the value of her current life. But the way in which her hand unwaveringly held the blade told him everything. “Well then,” he replied drily, eyes watching those familiar ruby orbs.
This woman knew how to kill but the art of subtlety was beyond her. He doubted an assassin would make such a show of almost killing him. Relaxing around her would be a stupid idea but Daichi could rest assured now that his button pushing was genuinely just a game of button pushing. Daichi offered a small shrug of agreement as she tucked the knife away. “See? Too messy. You should try not dating sometime, easier that way,” he replied nonchalantly as though relaying the weather, “people are selfish, foolish creatures. The only person you can rely on is yourself.”
And Anzu, of course, but he wasn’t about to admit her existence to a complete stranger.
Now that it had been established that this woman was a simple neko with a bad boy problem, he wondered what the point of escaping through this particular alleyway was. Sure, he lacked extensive knowledge of these passages but taking a dangerous route by an ex-boyfriend seemed a bit excessive. Unless there was a true prize at the end of course.
“Were you just too shy to ask for my company again or are we actually going somewhere?” Daichi asked pointedly but, unable to resist, launched into his next barrage of button-pushes, “I do like women who try and kill me though so if you want a kiss you’d better just tell me now. I guess I could try and fit into your bad boy persona but a desk job isn’t exactly a smothering ring. Well, for most things anyways. Pens though...”
Grinning like a fool, Daichi trailed behind her.

[googlefont=Lato][googlefont=Fira Sans Extra Condensed]
When Daichi’s cliché joke fell on deaf ears he merely shrugged, taking another long drag. Ruby’s confirmation of the unusual silence of the alleyway did nothing to alleviate his concerns that she might be out to get him.
Maybe the years, or the time away from Anzu, had started to feed his paranoia. Maybe Ruby was what she said she was; just some stupid woman who chose to date the wrong people for the wrong reasons. He considered it but only for a brief moment. No, she was a nekomata. Daichi had yet to know one that didn’t lie. “Dark and broody?” Daichi quirked an eyebrow before letting out a long, musical laugh, “don’t get your hopes up. I’m not in the market for any kind of partner right now. It’s too messy, as I’m sure you can understand.”
With the end of the alleyway in sight, Daichi snuffed his cigarette out on a nearby wall before flicking it in a random direction. He wasn’t really sure where he’d picked up the habit but it had stuck. But the time for self-reflection could come later. Right now he only wanted to press Ruby’s buttons for a reaction. “I think I liked you better with your cat ears,” he said, rather loudly before pressing on with, “if I didn’t know better I’d say you were trying to blend in which is strange because the alleyway is empty. Almost like… you have people you want to avoid. People who don’t like smokers? Another ex boyfriend?”
It was strange behavior for an assassin, possibly the only reason why he hadn’t drawn a knife on her to test her reflexes. Therefore, it was safe to assume if she wasn’t an assassin, she was still a questionable individual. Given that his quiet evening was ruined he thought it only fair to pursue answers from the very woman who had ruined it. “Look if you’re going to try and kill me you should do it already,” he stated simply, “I’m far too sober for a drawn out cat and mouse game. Though... if you showed me your tabby tail I might reconsider...”

Ruby’s chiding remark fell on uninterested ears. Fall behind? Please. Then she was off, her pace not quite a run but close enough to it that Daichi had to increase his stride. She weaved through the back alleys like it was as easy as breathing and Daichi trailed behind her.
At some point in their escape Ruby’s ears had all but dissipated prompting the question of what she was planning. After another turn the duo stood on an unfamiliar street. Despite the emptiness Daichi was certain it wasn’t the kind of place to be caught alone. At the smoking remark he quirked a brow at her but wordlessly pulled his cigs out of his pocket, grabbing the lighter to kick it into gear.
“You’ll have to teach me that sometime,” he remarked, inhaling the ashen contents of his poor addiction as he tucked the pack and lighter away.
He eyed their surroundings with suspicion but didn’t let it show in his posture. Ruby looked normal now, further cementing the annoyance Daichi had with Nekomatas. Dealing with any kind of shifter was just annoying. At least she wasn’t a skin walker because nothing skeeved him out more. Daichi turned to Ruby, speaking with smoke-lined breath. “So, is this meant to be a date? Because I don’t date women with boyfriends and, as much as I love a good dark and dangerous alleyway, this one doesn’t even have a barrel fire or questionable inhabitants,” he began, sucking in another breath as he lazily took the stick away from his mouth, “this is as much bad luck as eating moldy bread.”
Indeed, this alleyway was a little too quiet. But Ruby clearly had a plan. Maybe, if he were lucky, this would be the part where she tried to jump him. At least that way the night would go by quickly and he’d get his answers about the strange behavior she’d been exhibiting.

In retrospect he should have enjoyed the silence of the lobby. Someone was coughing in the far end but other than the rustling of magazines it was relaxing. Far more relaxing than dealing with an adult-child.
Maybe all this time away from Anzu had been wearing him down. He’d have to double up, spend a week without talking to anyone just working on missives. Heck after this he wanted a month alone.
Daichi spotted Blondie and for a second, he thought (hopefully) she might’ve forgotten what he looked like. No such luck. In one, sloppy lunge she was suddenly hanging of his neck sending all the I’m-being-touched-by-a-stranger alarm bells ringing. Anyone else might’ve gotten walloped but Daichi instead brought his hands to his forehead, trying to rub away the impending headache. “What the hell is a tandem bicycle?” he let his hand fall, shooting a sympathetic look at the nurse who had the pleasure of escorting Blondie out.
The receptionist also seemed irked by the elevated tone and lack of punctuation by Blondie’s words and so Daichi ushered her out the door and on to the street. As the automatic door slid shut behind them, Daichi turned towards Blondie. “Alright well this has been fun and all,” Daichi lied, holding a smile as he dug into his wallet to pull out enough bills to cover five noodle bowls. The dark-haired man promptly stuffed them in Blondie’s pocket, “there you go. As much noodles as you want heck, I’m sure you can go to the same place and they’ll serve you again. Alright? Cool. Hope you feel better soon.”
With his duty done and the noodle debt paid in full, Daichi felt himself breathing easier. He turned on heel, heading in the direction of his bike. Never mind noodles; he needed a drink.

There was far too much to unpack in what Ruby was saying. Daichi, having thought this was a night he could bury himself in a drink while having others entertain him, decided he didn’t care enough to bother with it. Whatever nonsense Ruby was spouting didn’t exactly match up with her words. Why had she walked out on her boyfriend then? Actually, that guy had been at the other end of the bar entirely…
Suddenly the idea of her being an assassin was becoming more plausible.
Before he could decide which red flag would stave him off from making a stupid decision, a hand grabbed his. Daichi’s gaze whipped around as his free hand moved to the knife at his side. It was just a second before he realized her true intentions. Only one person could be that loud coming from the bar.
Of course, given her innate abilities, the neko would hear him before Daichi would. He didn’t need to peer around the corner to know who he’d be looking at. “Friggin’ cats,” he muttered under his breath as he flicked her grip away. Letting someone that close was never a good idea, “well, seeing as my other option is murdering your boyfriend, I guess I have no choice but to follow you.”
Daichi’s tone was drenched with a playful sarcasm. He could think of several ways to escape but all of them would tip his hand too early. There was something morbidly fascinating about this woman and, in Daichi’s experience, it’d be smarter to get all the information he had now before deciding her true intentions. So that meant playing her game. He let his hand fall from his knife, shooting her a sharp look.
“If you’re here to bring me an early death nekomata-san, you’re a little late,” he swept his hand forward in a polite gesture, “lead the way,” just like that, an evening ruined in pursuit of answers he shouldn't care to want.
Things really had gotten boring without Anzu around.

denial isn't just a river in egypt
Just when it looked like the woman… no the girl, could behave she launched herself at the nearest touchable object. Daichi cursed to himself as he attempted to follow her. Much like a squirrel escaping the clutches of a predator, Blondie weaved her cotton-ball filled hand away from his grips until the door opened. Suddenly it was raining cotton balls.
“I – ooof,” he struggled with a cotton ball that had not only bopped him in the eye but was now also trying to enter his mouth. Daichi brushed himself off like he was caught in a spider web but by the time he had recovered the physician was giving him a strange look.
With a glare at Cali he began to pick up the balls and throw them in the trash. As he was almost finished the horrific statement, he’d been hoping she was too stupid to say accosted his ears.
"Oh! That's my cousin. He's my only ride here, so he can stay in the room,” she sang like a little bird, drawing his ire. Did she know? No, there was no way he was staying with this burnt-hand maniac. She could be someone else’s problem now. “Right, let me go get the bike I’ll be back,” the words were perfectly said with a forced smile and, as the physician began to wrap Blondie’s hands up Daichi darted out of the room.
Escape. He needed to escape. Heart-pounding he stalked right passed the secretary and through the doorway. Thank the kami, now he could get out of this nightmare of a trip. Daichi made his way to his bike, stuffing his hands in his pockets.
What a nutjob. No sense of self preservation. But… what if they DID have to cut off her hands? No that was ridiculous. He was briefly reminded of the time Anzu had to get stitches back when she served their lord. She’d been so afraid to go alone. Much like Blondie.
“Damnit,” he cussed to himself, turning mid trek to head back to the clinic where the death of his sanity awaited. When he reached the door, he sank down into the lobby’s couch, crossing his arms in anger at himself. This was ridiculous. He didn’t owe this human anything.
Not even noodles.

With the darker implications of her tone, Daichi had to wonder if that was a threat. Still he was amused at how quickly she jumped to talk to a man who had just drawn a knife on someone. The average person would be afraid but Ruby wasn’t. That either meant she was stupid or she was more capable than he had given her credit for.
“Mostly wondering how you can date a piece of trash like that,” he mused out loud.
Ruby had settled around the corner, just out of his sight but Daichi didn’t dare show his face. He was too close to the bar to stand out in the open. If someone had called the police it would be a bad time. Actually, come to think of it, shouldn’t Ruby’s angry hot-headed boyfriend be out here as well? Daichi was surprised he hadn’t gotten kicked out for chucking the glass.
“Besides you promised me bad luck, that was a mild inconvenience at best,” he reasoned, his shoe scuffing the pavement as he pushed off from the wall to stand at the edge of the alley, “more importantly, what are you doing out here? Did they kick you out too?”
Daichi mostly wanted a smoke at this point but didn’t dare take up one of his hands so close to the bar he’d just been tossed out of. He could just about see her now, propped up against the wall as he was. Sage irises focused on her from the alleyway shadows.
“I bet you were hoping i'd rescue you. Too bad because my rescuing days are long since dead,” he smirked, telling himself that the only reason he’d truly lingered here was listening to his instincts. Now that they were satisfied, he could leave.
After Ruby’s answers of course.

when did dai become a dad xD
A font of words flowed from her mouth. No, not a font. A tsunami: a twenty-foot wave that came crashing down upon his unsuspecting ears. Its turbulent waters assaulted his ear drums to the point of headache. Remnants of seaweed and drenched earth were needles in his brain, poking each area incessantly until nothing was left save a small sliver of his sanity.
Daichi reached out with his entire hand and placed it straight over her mouth. “Holy shit woman, stop for some air, would you?” he gave it a second, enjoying the sweet silence before he removed his hand and instead gripped her shoulders.
Normally he wouldn’t touch another person unless absolutely necessary but, in this case, it was essential for added punctuation. This woman wouldn’t get it otherwise. As much as Daichi loathed playing a support piece this seemed the fastest way to get her gone from his life. He just had to get her in this building under somebody else’s care.
“Okay. I have no idea what sort of madness you just said. We’re going into the building, they are going to wrap your hands in gauze after cleaning them, and then we can go for noodles somewhere. So, the faster we get in the building the faster you get your noodles,” he didn’t wait for her to reply but instead guided her into the clinic.
The woman behind the desk peered over her glasses at them for a second.
“Room three, we’ll get your information in a bit,” the woman went back to typing, not giving them anymore of her attention. Daichi didn’t need to be told twice. He guided Cali into an examination room with a cot at the center and a multitude of cabinets.
“Sit,” he instructed, “and don’t touch anything.”
Daichi stood close to the door, arms crossed as he (once again for the second time today) contemplated his life choices. The soft, methodical sound of footsteps in the hall suggested that someone might be in to see them shortly. Thank the kami. He could slip out while they were wrapping her hands.

So much for a relaxing evening of pulling apart social interactions with a drink at his side. Maybe it would’ve been better just to let the guy beat him up. No, tomorrow was a busy day and sustaining even the slightest of injuries could be dangerous. He pulled his jacket back into order as the door swung shut behind him.
There was still a bad taste in his mouth. Like a little whisper in his ear telling him to wait just a minute. Call it paranoia but it had saved him plenty of times for Daichi to be weary of the dangers of ignoring it. Therefore, he settled into the shadow of a nearby building and crossed his arms. Maybe lingering here as a spider would be the wiser choice…
Ruby. That obnoxious mischief reflected in those deep pools. It was the face value of her appearance but underneath lay something else. Something that was far too familiar to him.
"Hey Touri! You still hanging around?"
The loud boom of her voice echoed against the buildings, filling up his particular alleyway as well. While it wasn’t late enough for danger, it was late enough that things would be lurking. Maybe she didn’t care. Daichi stood on the precipice of a decision: ignore her and watch from afar as usual or risk getting caught in another conflict. Pressing his lips tight at his own stupidity, he made his choice swiftly.
“In this dark alleyway yes. Why don’t you come over? Surely nothing dangerous could happen,” despite his irritation at himself, his words were their usual sarcasm-drenched symphony. Daichi uncrossed his arms while wondering if those ears were as good as she let on.
It would be impossible to discern which alley otherwise; exactly why he’d picked it.

welp, add this bar to the blacklist
He’d expected Ruby to stand idly by nursing her drink as she watched the fireworks play out. Instead she almost seemed to be taking his side for a second. Daichi’s fingers slid to grasp the hilt of the knife inside his jacket as the behemoth before him focused his white-hot rage on the neko. If he so much as moved an inch in her direction… but the man’s attention soon focused back to Daichi. “Can you please just say what you have to say already? If you’re going to beat me up just do it already,” Daichi forced his tone to be bored, specifically to hit a nerve and then added, “thanks to you I need to buy a new drink.”
Fortunately, this was enough to spur the drunkard into action, he shoved Daichi backwards with a snarl. The jorogumo staggered into a nearby table. As his hand gripped a chair the table’s contents were sent flying with the impact but Daichi remained relatively unharmed.
This was far too much of a scene for him to be involved in right now and, as much as he wanted to play, this was neither the time nor the place.
As the belligerent man swung a fist in his direction Daichi ducked and then pulled the knife from its carefully hidden sheathe so that the blade drew a thin line of blood as he held it to the man’s throat. If the bar had been quiet before it was absolutely still now.
“Contrary to what this looks like, I’m not going to kill you,” he narrowed his eyes at the ruddy-complexioned man who stood facing a dilemma he probably had never faced before, “this is just a reminder that you don't own her.”
Daichi withdrew his knife, tucking it back where it belonged. Already the bar’s bouncer was on his way over and the bar tender held a cellphone in her hand. It was time to go. He shot his hands up in a gesture of peace and, with one last look at the neko who’d instigated the whole thing, made his way outside.

Touri? Where the heck had she gotten that nickname from? Daichi didn’t bother opening his eyes for a second. No, it was the not-so-subtle slap of feet against wood that told him someone else was approaching. Like a cat that was far too tired to be bothered, he opened one eye gingerly. In truth it was the playful meow that Ruby gave him that caused him to reevaluate his life choices.
"Oi! Who the hell do you think you are?!".
The words were pointed, suggestive of someone who’d had far too much to drink, and spoken directly at Daichi’s ear five times too loudly. “Is this about your girlfriend here? You know, you really should buy her that handbag. She’s been absolutely livid trying to get her hooks into someone tonight,” he didn’t take his eyes away from the drink in his hand, giving it a little stir, “I mean look at her, meowing at strangers now.”
Daichi kept his expression neutral though there was a particular sort of disdain lightly aimed at Ruby for a second only long enough for her to notice. Had she been warning him that her boyfriend was near with that story? He really had thought it was fake. “Personally, I’d dump her and get a new one. Seems like too much work,” even before he’d finished the sentence Daichi knew he’d gone too far. He wasn’t good in a fight with a combatant of equal strength but a drunk? Unless there was fire involved, he’d be fine.
As he raised the glass to take another drink a bear-like smack sent the glass flying behind the bar.
Shrieks rose up from one corner followed by a deadening silence. The glass crashed against the interior counter and shattered into a thousand pieces. Daichi’s hand remained poised midair, irritation flying across his brow. But the boyfriend wasn’t done. He grabbed the collar of Daichi’s jacket and pulled him close in what was meant to be an intimidating motion.
“You think you’re better than me you little shit? I’d like to see you keep talking trash now.”
Daichi had to resist from wrinkling his nose at the assault of drink-breath that wafted his way. Well, this was going to be very, very not boring.

Still committed to her ridiculous story, of course. Even if the sky were falling down around her, she’d probably continue to claim it was the same pastel blue it always was. Well, then he would commit to his own.
Daichi struggled not to laugh as she seemed to process his words. The handbag part didn’t even bring a twitch to the corner of her mouth which only made him more perplexed at this point. It was almost like she was concentrating on something else entirely.
“I’m not a dog that jumps for tricks,” he replied in a cold tone, “besides, what are you going to do? Meow incessantly at me until I feed you?”
Daichi chuckled, taking a long swig of his drink. He realized that the one he’d ordered for her still sat untouched. Of course. She’d asked to buy him a drink and so now she wasn’t even going to drink. Normally that would make him suspicious enough. Was she scoping him out before a kill? His eyes focused on the dip of her two, dark ears.
No. If she was good enough to draw his interest elsewhere then he deserved to be murdered. Settling back into his hubris, he tapped the counter by the drink he’d bought her.
“I thought you were thirsty? It’s not poison you know,” he flashed white at her through his smile.
What a strange woman. Well, it didn’t matter how much of an enigma she was because he would be leaving after this drink. Daichi took another long sip of the gin before settling on the bar stool. No sense in standing anymore.
He closed his eyes for a second, drinking in the loud din of the bar around them.

For a split second Daichi thought she might actually tell him the truth. But when she spun her tale of woe and misfortune, he knew instantly she was laughing at him. Daichi’s cold gaze remained unwavering as Ruby continued to sing the praises of her non-existent handbag. Which way would push her buttons more? Maybe that was the fun of it; he simply had no idea.
“Your boyfriend will love your flirting with other people then,” he quipped back and then added, “though I guess you’re the kind of woman who takes joy in instigating fights or maybe you just don’t care about anyone other than yourself.”
Daichi leaned closer, a smirk spreading across his lips.
“I’m always looking for a twisted rush,” he turned towards the bar, grabbing the drink that the bartender slid in front of him and giving it a little stir. Ruby’s drink sat just to the right but he didn’t touch it as he turned back to her, “you see my father never loved me. My mother died before I was born so I’m an only child. I used to do drugs to keep the edge off but now it doesn’t fill the gap in my heart. My interests are darker…”
He gave the woman his best (and quite convincing) cold stare. For dramatics mostly, Daichi took a long sip of the drink in his hand before continuing his own spun tale.
“You see the truth is, I can’t afford a handbag I like so instead I come here to stare enviously at other’s handbags,” Daichi laughed, his serious expression caved to one that once again echoed his amusement. If that didn’t make her angry, he’d have to dig a little deeper.

Halfway through his walk out of the noodle bar he heard a loud crash. Daichi whipped around to see a very confused blondie standing amidst a broken shards of the bowl sitting among noodles and steam. At least they wouldn’t have to scrape half her skin off, he guessed. Still, what on earth was wrong with this woman? Part of him wanted to run away at this point but it seemed cruel even for him.
“Quit calling me that!” he snapped, even more confused by her inability to realize where they needed to go, “don’t your hands hurt? Most people by now would be crying.”
It wasn’t the worst burns he’d seen sure but Daichi had been around enough to tell when something should hurt. If he wasn’t so concerned for her, he might’ve been impressed. A small voice in the back of his mind again questioned why he was doing this? Anzu would be laughing at him.
“Look, I’ll get you noodles once you get those bandaged at the clinic, it’s not that far from here,” Daichi wanted to lug her along but the angry circumstances that they’d already displayed told him it was best not to press his luck or tomorrow’s headline would be “strange-dark-haired-man-kidnaps-innocent-blonde-after-burning-her-hands”.
Daichi visibly groaned, though thankful they’d arrived.
“Okay here we are. Just go in and tell them you burnt your hands,” he motioned elaborately to the door, the irritation fading at the prospect of having a moment to evaluate just how he’d gotten himself in this position.
