Welcome to The Duality of Man, an original animanga role-play that features numerous supernatural creatures. Unfortunately, these various species have distanced themselves because of the war that occurred thousands of years ago, plaguing some with eyes that only see their dualism. While others meddle themself with their differences, two groups fight, each attempting to eliminate the other in for their definition of worldly peace. These two groups of the Terror Response Syndicate (TRS) and the Assembly of Phantoms (AP). With individuals fighting merely over their differences, it brings uncertainty to the outcome of this war.
We happily accept all role-players as long as they obey the rules and are capable of meeting our word count of 50. This does include those who are unfamiliar with this style of role-playing. The staff of The Duality of Man are willing to happily help those who are new to the role-playing world so they feel comfortable on site. Feel free to message the staff if you need help, they can be found here or in the site Discord and will gladly answer questions alongside calm concerns. If you have any suggestions we would love to hear them; guests may use the support board as a suggestion area as well. Should you decide to join, may I say welcome to the site and we all hope you enjoy your time here.

Similar to a majority of males in the Mallori family, Vaughn possessed a tall and lean frame. The amount of muscle on Vaughn's body is best defined as average, with nothing exceeding noteworthy circumstances; his lack of significant physical strength resulting in the decision to pursue private investigation opposed to law enforcement. Oftentimes, Vaughn is taller than a majority of people with a 6'1" height. The pleasantly slender appearance of his body commonly emphasizes height. There are few scars that mare his pale complexion, this being limited to scars created by rope around his wrist. Another noteworthy feature is the manner of which Vaughn walks, since there is a slight limp created from an injury that affects his left leg. There is a strange characteristic from his death is his skin tends to prune faster in water and can temporary bloch and bloat. There is a pale pigment to his complexion as a result of his death.
Most people’s eyes get fixated on Vaughn’s face because of the peculiar nature, leaving a majority shocked and the spirit himself sticking out. Covering the entirety of his face is a white mask, the polished surface shining. Rarely, Vaughn will uncover his face considering the nature of his abilities. When uncovered, people are oftentimes surprised by the gentle nature of Vaughn’s face. His face is slender, cheeks gradually leading up into high cheekbones. There is a beauty to his face from this, providing a somewhat feminine appeal. There is a silvery colouring to his hair, the strands being slicked back in a stylish manner, providing for a clean and formal attraction. His eyes are peculiar, having a bright yellow colouring that can surprise people and can be usually see through the slit holes within his mask.
The most unique portion of Vaughn’s usual attire is the stark white masked that constant covers his face. Otherwise, he wears formal clothing, frequently enjoying the comfort of slacks, dress shirts with a suit coat and tie to complete the outfit. He wears simple dress shoes with the usual colour of black. Vaughn adores top hats, thus he is commonly wearing one to complete the entirety of his formal appearance. His dress pants oftentimes have thin stripes going vertically down the legs, these stripes are red. A dark red is a frequent accenting colour to Vaughn’s clothing.
Spiritual Form: Well in this form, Vaughn is unable to interact with the world on the physical level. Which means nothing can touch him just as he can not touch anything. This comes with the unfortunate exception of power based attacks from reapers and wraiths and some gifted with particular powers designed to harm his kind, although, only their abilities can harm him. In this form, Vaughn’s body is more transparent and gains a dim light to it. In order to maintain steady power flow and control in this form, Vaughn must be wearing the locket around his neck. The reason for this is because the locket itself is bind to his soul. Should the locket be out of a 10 ft radius, his abilities in this form would be weakened substantially.
Phasing -- Advanced When it is required to sneak into buildings to acquire information, Vaughn naturally placed immense effort into learning the ability. While he is in spiritual form, he can phase through anything, although, he can not bring other individuals with him. This ability is quite effortless considering it takes a low amount of energy and can be done by merely walking. Unfortunately, if the walls are thick enough, he can get lost amidst the material. This is especially problematic since Vaughn must close his eyes to phase through longer distances. Wards can make him unable to phase, which is the best method to trap him. Whenever he phases through an individual, the person feels a peculiar chill down their spine. This can resort in him being detected should he not take caution.
Invisibility -- Advanced Spirits appear to have an endless amount of useful abilities for a private investigator who sneaks around dangerous locations on occasion. Turning invisible can occur at the snap of a finger, allowing nobody to see Vaughn. Although, certain angles of light can reveal his presence and individuals with an enhanced sense of smell or hearing can be able to detect him. Certain abilities can even allow for Vaughn to be seen clearly despite the abilities activation. He can only access his invisibility while he is in spiritual form.
Enhanced Sensory -- Intermediate This allows for Vaughn to sense those around him, even when he remains out of the room. He can sense in about a 3 meter radius, occasionally going further should he decide to place more focus into it. This ability does drain more power on occasion compared to his other abilities, thus it is used sparingly. He prefers the usage of invisibility and phasing to sneak through buildings and mostly uses this as a radar of sorts should he get lost or is searching for a particular individual. Depending on distance, Vaughn can have difficulty distinguishing certain people from others. The closer they are, the easier Vaughn can sense the details and figure out who they are, the further making it immensely difficult. This ability is occasionally used on par with his phasing to sense which direction he is going while using the ability.
Physical Form: This form is required for Vaughn to interact with the physical world, without it he would be merely phasing through everything. In this form, Vaughn is capable of unlocking more offensive abilities. Thus, he is unable to harm others unless he is in this form. The physical form allows for him to appear more human, removing the transparency and dim lighting of his body, but also making him fully visible. The main method to discover his spirit ties is the slight gargle that can be heard while he speaks, although, it remains only a whisper of sound. This form is tied to the mask that Vaughn wears since during his death, it was a notable piece of attire on his body. Should the mask fall out of a 10 ft radius, Vaughn’s strength in his powers drops substantially.
Telekinesis -- Advanced In tight situations, being able to move objects with mere thought can be extremely useful in most circumstances. With this ability, Vaughn can lift a variety of objects by using psychic means, allowing him to not even be required to touch it. He can suspend objects for long periods of time, throw them about a room or give somebody an inconspicuous shove. The capabilities of his telekinesis are endless so long as Vaughn maintains a creative mind and can visualize the object floating in the air. While he can make the object float, the item itself still has the possibility to make noise which can key people into where or what he is holding. Since this is merely a psychic grip, Vaughn is unable to squeeze people or objects with the use of his telekinesis, he can only suspend them. This means they can struggle to their heart’s content or even call for help as needed.
Naturally, the ability comes with some limits to what Vaughn is capable of doing. He can only use his telekinesis on items within a 10-meter radius of himself. Without his mask, this drops to a meagre 5-meter radius. Weight is another factor that contributes to what exactly Vaughn can lift. He can lift small, unpacked cars at most, but this does arrive with some hindrance. As the weight of the object increases, the harder it is for Vaughn to pick it up and carry it with the use of his telekinesis. Lifting heavy objects obsessively with the use of his telekinesis can result in painful migraines and days of the ability remaining dormant.
Hymns -- Beginner While hymns possess a variety of capabilities, Vaughn has never been much of a singer nor does he excelled in the talent. There would never be a shortage of songs for the use, but due to his lacking in vocal talents, hymns hardly function properly. Using the ability oftentimes results in exhaustion immediately afterwards or even during the song itself. He cannot keep this type of magic functioning for long periods of time.
Possession -- Intermediate The ability to control others always had an acute fascination for Vaughn. He can essentially persuade an individual to do things differently or to accomplish something out of character. Although, he has always had ill feelings towards the ability, thus he uses it sparingly and commonly during emergency situations at most. While he is incapable of accomplishing anything spectacular, he can essentially give the person a nudge to do something different. The more likely the person would accomplish something, the easier for Vaughn to nudge them in that direction. Oddly enough, he uses this more frequently to give people a gentle push towards what they would like to do. Think of it as more of a persuasion rather than complete control over an individual. When Vaughn does attempt to take control, he can only do small things or delay the actions of another individual slightly.
Illusion Manipulation -- Advanced Deception can be an important art on occasion for somebody seeking the truth. The art of illusions was taken seriously by Vaughn once he returned as a spirit, the necessity for disguises and various other deceptions being too valuable to be overlooked. With illusions, Vaughn can make somebody feel, smell, hear, taste and see things that are not truly there. While his illusions are incapable of physically harming another individual, the mental ramifications can be costly to the opponent. Tactics like creating hellish landscapes, creatures or scenes have all been used as a defense; an attempt to scare away enemies perse. Where he can mentally harm another individual, Vaughn can also instigate mental healing by weaving the correct illusions to generate a calming effect on the other individual. This ability also allows for Vaughn to hide inside the illusions, which oftentimes allows for him to slip past other people with ease. He is renown for surrounding himself in illusions to create a disguise to avoid detection or to get information he could not receive with his own face. Usually, he is unable to disguise is rather tall figure which can cause predicaments on some occasions.
Those with keen senses or psychic shields are immune to Vaughn’s illusion manipulation, which can be bothersome. Those with enhanced senses can usually notice the illusion very quickly if they listen to their heightened senses. Machines are more difficult to trick than people, the perceptiveness of technology frequently working against the private investigator on most occasions. Cameras and recording technology is unable to detect the disguise, but scanners are more difficult to fool. This ability only works in a 30-meter radius of Vaughn, rarely any further. Should he be separated from the mask, this drops to a meagre 10-meter radius.
Flight -- Advanced The ability to fly without the use of wings sounded like a marvellous advancement to Vaughn, thus he gleefully took the opportunity to learn about this ability. He is capable of flying for extended periods of time, this ability oftentimes being quicker than walking or running on most occasions. He could leisurely float or hover in a location or soar through the city as he pleases. Usually, he only uses the ability for 3 hours to avoid exhaust, but he can continue flying for 6 hours if required.
Naturals: Immortality, Self-sustenance
backstory
Born to his parents, Tom and Linda Mallori, Vaughn had a pleasant life around his hard-working parents. He became the youngest son within the Mallori family, being six years younger than his older brother Derek. Throughout his infant years was a soothing quiet, the family living in a small home Vancouver, BC. Their quiet life resulted in an extensive amount of time properly raising their children. Tom and Linda were incredible parents, providing an excellent balance of strictness and freedom for their sons. At a young age, Vaughn began assisting his parents with chores since he craved the concept of being able to assist his beloved parents. Life was kind to Vaughn during his childhood, the young boy becoming popular in school very quickly. With such splendors and friendship galore, Vaughn became a happy child. His family was fortunate, his brother would protect him and finally he found himself stationed at the popular table; the child believed he had everything.
A few years passed, Vaughn never noticing another kid who was a year younger than him. At first, the young boy thought nothing about the timid child. He merely existed, and being a rather courteous soul, Vaughn felt no need to disturb the boy’s existence. Alas, as days passed, there were desires to introduce himself and spend time with the shy boy who he would capture his attention, his eyes always lingering longer than necessary. After a while, Vaughn managed to catch a glimpse of his friends bullying the poor boy and later being vanquished by the boy’s older brothers. Witnessing the sight brought an anger to Vaughn, the young kid gaining the nerve to stand up against his friends and cut ties with them. There was no need to treat somebody horribly and instead of sticking to his lonesome, he reached out to the timid boy. The amount of times his eyes would linger allowed him to know about the boy’s difficulty in making friends, thus Vaughn became determined to be a true friend to him. The boy’s name was Alain, and there was never a day that Vaughn regretted his decision.
Time spent with Alain were the best days of Vaughn’s life as something inside kept insisting his presence to be necessary. Despite losing an entire group of friends, Vaughn believed the sacrifice was worthy if he could spend his time with the boy who brought light to his days. As time proceeded, Vaughn’s care towards Alain grew immensely as the pair began getting closer. Constantly, he would concern himself with matters such as Alain’s health and sacrifice his own energy to maintain a close proximity with the siren. Some days, his parents would fret and he would grow exhausted, but resisting the urge to keep Alain healthy was impossible. There was something spectacular about Alain, a certain thrill Vaughn could only discover whenever the blond was present. A rapid beating to his heart, a disarming of his senses, a warmth to his cheeks and bashful glances away to avoid the redness of his cheeks being observed. The adorable face he grew to admire, those timid actions and intellectual mindset; Alain was perfect. Easily, Vaughn grew attached to his friend as he fell head over heels in love with the beautiful siren.
When they entered high school, everything appeared to be lining up excellently as Vaughn gained the courage to ask Alain to be his boyfriend. There was nobody else that could compare to the divine siren and Vaughn loved him with all his heart. Those wonderful days spent together on dates were the greatest days of Vaughn’s life, especially when he could see Alain smile; observing the action was heartwarming. They even got matching lockets to display their love for one another. As graduation began approaching, there was a major debate on what exactly Vaughn wanted to accomplish. While his happiness was fortified with Alain around, he would still require a stable source of income to provide his love with all of life's necessities alongside some spare to spoil. Many stated acting to be a viable career choice on account of his skill, but notions like fame always bothered the young man. He wanted to keep his acting limited to small theater groups to avoid it spiralling out of control and causing future problems. Thus, Vaughn was left graduating without any certainty in his future choices. He had taken plenty of classes, opening up a variety for post-secondary education, but he was uncertain.
This time in Vaughn’s life was filled with uncertainty, the man oftentimes talking everything through with his boyfriend. At least with Alain around, he could find sanction and calmness; a place to talk through his thoughts without worry of disapproval. He wanted to get a stable income for them hastily in hopes they could move in together and possibly start their lives together. Unfortunately, everything shattered a week after graduation. After hours of not receiving text messages from his precious Alain, Vaughn had left to go visit his home. He knocked on the door, waiting for Alain to answer so they could spend some quality time together. When nobody answered the door, the young man worried and forced the front door open to discover an empty house. The essentials were taken, anything related to the family suddenly vanishing. The sight was panicking as Vaughn rushed to questioned the neighbours who appeared confused about the sudden disappearance. They had simply left without even leaving a message and the discovery destroyed Vaughn. His boyfriend who he devoted himself to had been taken away from him, and he was clueless as to why.
Afterwards, Vaughn felt more alone than ever without the everlasting support of Alain. Those lonely evenings brought a new goal and determination to Vaughn’s life. He remembered how Alain’s family were lawyers and how it was expected for the children to take similar occupations. While Vaughn could never visualize himself as a lawyer, he instead took a similar path and worked towards getting himself into classes about law enforcement. He planned to be a private investigator and desperately hoped to gain skills that could allow him to discover where Alain disappeared to. Even if Alain decided to end their relationship with this sudden escape, Vaughn desired to know if he was happy and healthy. While he would be disappointed about Alain finding happiness with another individual, Vaughn desired that for his beloved Alain; he meant everything to him. He would at least search for Alain and apologize for not being adequate boyfriend material. When he was about to start college, his brother had his daughter and lost his wife in the process. It made for a rocky start at the beginning, but Vaughn worked hard to balance school with assisting his brother.
There was a financial impact on Derek because of the change, thus Vaughn frequently assisted with babysitting, even when he had papers due. The young man could never resist time with his niece, Midori. The wonderful young girl always brought a smile to Vaughn’s face and he was determined to be the best uncle. He would spend plenty of time with Midori, even taking Derek’s place at father-daughter events when necessary. Whenever he could, Vaughn would step up to the plate to assist his niece. He would help her with homework, shower her with familial affection and even take her to the places she desired to go. The young girl felt like a daughter to Vaughn, and would bring plenty of happiness to his days. When he finished college, Vaughn began searching for jobs, attempting to stay in Vancouver, but unfortunately things would not work out. There were more job opportunities across the country in the city of Lorsette where crime was running rampant. Packing up his bags to leave was difficult despite Derek stating he would join Vaughn in Lorsette after a month.
When Vaughn was forced to say goodbye to Midori, even if it would be brief, he provided her with a tight hug before leaving the city he always called home. He moved across the country to Lorsette, where he settled in an apartment and began working immediately. The loneliness returned when he first arrived in Lorsette, Vaughn finding himself upset since he was forced to leave the place he grew up; where he met Alain. He wanted to discover where his boyfriend went, alas, job opportunities pulled him away. Already, he found himself missing his niece despite Derek promising to join Vaughn after a month; his brother could not bare to separate Midori from her uncle. The month was rough with Vaughn distracting himself with work to desperately avoid the growing loneliness of living in a new city. He would frequently take job opportunities, perhaps even stacking to much work onto his shoulders. Over the month, Vaughn built a name for himself which allowed for his income to easily stabilize.
When the date arrived for Derek to join him, Vaughn had arrived at the airport to find an unusual surprise awaiting him there. Arriving off the plane were his distraught parents guiding Midori towards her precious uncle. Immediately, everything felt off as the young man inquired about what was wrong. Over the mere month of his absence, Derek had been accused of 1st degree murder and was facing the possibility of arrest. Without hesitation, Vaughn attempted to phone to get in contact with Derek for further details. His brother explained the situation, making a simple request for him to take custody over Midori. There was a brief verbal argument as Vaughn rebuked about the notion of Derek going to jail, the young man believing him to be innocent of all charges; his older brother was a saint! Consistently, Derek insisted he would be going to jail, refusing to provide Vaughn with further details about the case itself. The notion frustrated Vaughn, but instead of focusing on his brother, he devoted his attention to Midori since his niece needed a home. While his brother’s case was processed, Vaughn worked towards gaining custody over his niece which was successful because of his financial stability.
A few months passed as Vaughn worked throughout the city, solving cases with a frightening speed because of his intellectual mind while still spending adequate time with his niece. Another file arrived, describing victims who appeared to be brutally tortured prior to death alongside a list of suspects. The puzzle began as Vaughn interrogated people, gathering information towards a possible verdict. Deciphering information was difficult, Vaughn having to verify several facts before coming to a theoretically conclusion. He still needed his suspicions confirmed, but Vaughn believed the murderer to be a TRS ward medic, a mysterious man who appeared outwardly pleasant. There was certainty he could discover substantial proof about the murderer, all he needed was to weave all the pieces together. The young man was satisfied over his work, although, he spared little time to relax with exceptions of rehearsals and theater enjoyment.
On one evening, he had been prepared for the opening of a play, his mask already secured to his face while he hustled towards the theater. Prior, his mind had fixated too much on the case itself which suggested the possibility of being late. Everything happened tremendously fast as Vaughn felt something collide with his left leg, pain shooting through it. He collapsed to the ground as a group of masked individuals converged on him, managing to knock him out and throw him in the trunk of a car. The journey was a blur, Vaughn narrowly gaining consciousness as the sound of a motor filled the air. The splashing of water was evident, his arms and legs bound as he was leaned against one side of the boat. The people talked, but it was merely muddled words to his barely conscious mind. Droplets of water managed to reach his cheek, his eyes lazily glancing out to the expanse of water and the distant lights of the city. They stopped suddenly, the people in the boat shifting around as they secured the ropes attached to his feet to something.
Somebody lifted him while another held what appeared to be a secured, heavy bag with two arms. Vaughn was tossed overboard, his body only floating for a few moments before the bag splashed into the water beside him. Panic claimed him as he was suddenly dragged down to the depths, secured down and unable to move. He struggled against his ropes, attempting to hold his breath for as long as possible. His lungs burned, screaming for oxygen while he desperately attempted to escape the water death. Eventually, he was forced to release his breath as water slithered into his lungs. The panicked struggled continued, Vaughn desperately attempting to escape the cold cusp of death. As everything began fading to black, he heard the loud motor of the boat above suddenly start up. The following morning, Vaughn Mallori’s body was discovered beneath the water after witnesses stated seeing a boat out on the waters of Starlight Beach. Based on the evidence, a homicide occurred, drowning being used as the method to murder the man.
Purgatory was a strange place as Vaughn awoke, breathing deeply as he remembered his death vividly. The world was a greyscale, extending over miles of seemingly endless land. When Vaughn stood, he glanced around in dismay. He could not have entered the realm of the undead, not with Midori still alive and needing him. The man wandered aimlessly across the vast plains, begging for a way to escape the dull realm. Eventually, word reached Thanatos, the god of death eventually finding Vaughn. They exchanged few words, but without hesitance, Vaughn struck a deal with the god of death. The restless nature of his soul resulted in Vaughn promptly returning as a spirit, his body regaining life as he was awkwardly prepped for examination. The morgue staff gained a surprise as Vaughn suddenly awake, panicking momentarily when he saw the staff. Clothes were retrieved and family was contacted as legal affairs were sorted and Vaughn returned to taking care of Midori. Despite the frightening situation, he returned to work as a private investigator.
After a few years passed, Vaughn continued caring for Midori, but found himself unable to date another person after Alain. Even after the passing of many years, Vaughn’s heart still longed for the blond, to feel his soft lips, hold him close and tell him how much he loved him. He mostly focused on discovering his powers, finding his certain modes to be correlated to certain items he had with him upon death. The mask powering his physical powers while the pendant of his boyfriend powered the spiritual. One day, the spirit decided to take a walk through the city, his yellow eyes finally noticing a familiar face. Instantly, Vaughn paused, stopping the man to better examine his face. The new spirit’s eyes widened as he realized who he had discovered on his walk. The man he loved most was in front of his, his precious Alain. Despite being uncertain of whether the mutual feelings remained, Vaughn removed his mask, caressing Alain’s face and kissed him deeply. Their relationship kicked off with a bang again as the pair managed to start off where they left. After a mere few months, Vaughn made the hasty decision to marry Alain in hopes they would never be separated again.
