Thannah paused in the hallway just before the staircase in order to turn back and gaze out into the dark space of the living room and kitchen. The house was completely silent, with the exception of the analog clock hanging on the wall ticking away the seconds to every minute. The sound loomed over the first floor as the floor boards creaked to settle. Her parents had retired to their bedroom for the night and to Thannah the dreary and gray image laid out before her was like the picture-perfect look into the feelings she held toward her home life. No longer the naive little girl she had once been; the epiphany of her life was inadequacy. The somber shades of gray couldn’t ever hope to hold a flame to the vibrant rays of light and all the colors it washed over the world.
[break][break]
“Holly,” She called for her spaniel puppy and the two ascended the staircase. Entrance into the world of other’s thoughts had come both as a blessing and a nightmare. It had stripped her — quickly — of the innocent views she had once held toward the world. But, there were pieces of light that broke through the dreariness of mankind. Her violet eyes lifted to the solid white of her door, basking in the illuminating glow from her bedroom light. The demon boy, Nicolas, had been a look into the mind of a more selfless and kind individual. Although, Thannah knew that the mind was a tricky thing and she wasn’t so quick to trust her judgement based only on one frightened night’s worth of mind-delving.
[break][break]
The otherwise bland expression that had settled into her features bloomed into a coyness that brightened her features and added color to her soft skin. She had looked up techniques on building memory and she wanted to try something she heard learned on some Youtube videos. A man had been able to memorize multiple decks of cards and their positions by linking them to mental images, and now Thannah wondered if she could link others thoughts to one mental image and others speech to a different image.
[break][break]
Nicolas, tonight, was going to be her first guinea pig. Thannah’s expression faltered for a moment, because she wasn’t immune to her unpleasant traits, especially when she thought of a demon as someone selfless and good in the world. It made her feel vile and wicked, and she would have to try even harder to be the beautiful, cute, flawless and sweet girl she always pretended to be.
[break][break]
It was a handful of minutes later that Nicolas’ voice filled the air, like an invisible current only she could witness. The thought made her smile to herself as she remained seated at her desk beside the window. Holly had taken up residence on the ground beside her feet, chewing a bone she had brought up for her.
[break][break]
How many guys do I know that creep into girls bedrooms at night? His thoughts were spoken out loud to her. Thannah was surprised, and actually embarrassed, by the raciness of his thoughts, but had to hold back her laughter quite willfully when he seemed to become extremely embarrassed and flabbergasted with himself as he realized that it had sounded ‘creepy as hell’.
[break][break]
She let out a slow and shaky breath, pursed her lips together, and then attempted to file those thoughts away under the image of a white card with a crown imprinted in the middle for her powerful and unique ability to read minds. It twirled in her mind as she stored them into that corner, and felt a little funny, but hoped that the technique would work.
[break][break]
Nicolas tapped on the glass of the window and Thannah turned her gaze to him, expression brightening, before she stood from her chair and proceeded to take down the charm he had made for her last night. Tonight she had purposely chosen a pajama set that she was more comfortable being seen in, as opposed to the thin and airy tiny shorts and short-sleeved shirt she had been caught in yesterday.
[break][break]
She opened the set of windows, her smile brightening with barely veiled excitement as she pressed a finger to her lips in a sign for him to keep quiet as she gestured for him to come into her bedroom.
